Fort Stockton RV Park

Stay Date:  March 2014
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Fort Stockton1This park is our preferred stay location in Fort Stockton.  Located a few miles east of town, it’s convenient to access and fairly quiet compared to the locations in town.  A popular and busy stop, it fills up almost every night, and the addition of an area for oilfield workers has probably Fort Stockton2added stress to the restrooms.  Friendly staff, easy check in, and nice pull-thru convenient to the access road.  Dirt interior roads, although not too dusty, with a few trees and a bit of grass.  Sites are medium sized, with a small cement patio and table, and hookups work well.  No cable, but Fort Stockton3satellite was unobstructed.  The WiFi was slow, probably due to the number of users, but Verizon cell and data worked well.  A small cafĂ© serves breakfast at reasonable price daily and dinner Fri-Sun; we’ve always enjoyed the food here.  A pool is available for warmer weather.  $32/night.  Fort Stockton RV Park

Junction–North Llano RV Park, Junction TX

Stay Date:  March 2014
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
Junction TX1This park is our stay of choice when traveling in/out of the San Antonio area.  A former KOA, the park is easily accessed from I-10, is gated for security, and gives a 20% discount to military veterans.  An escort is provided to you site, and pull-thrus are level, good sized, and have a shaded patio, furniture, grill, Junction TX2and fire pit – a nice touch.  Located along the Llano River, there are large trees throughout the park but none obstructed our rooftop satellite.  Verizon Cell and data were good but sometimes slow.  Cable TV and WiFi were free and worked well.  Propane is available, and there’s a small store in the office.  Our only complaint is that the interior roads are very Junction TX4dusty, and our car and rear of the motor home were covered by the time we were parked.  The couple that manage the park are very professional and friendly.  Junction doesn’t have much to offer other than fast-food along the interstate, but it’s a convenient fuel stop with two truck stops at the exit.  $31.50/night with discount.  Junction-North Llano RV Park

Priddy Meadow RV Park, Wimberley, TX

Stay Date:  Mar 2014
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
Priddy Meadow1We spent almost six months here while Brenda recuperated from shoulder surgery, and couldn’t have found a better place for a long term stay.  The location was perfect – just outside  charming Wimberley with its good assortment of restaurants and shopping, and yet just 12 miles to San Marcos and our medical Priddy Meadow3facilities.  We stumbled on this park by accident, a short distance off of Rt 12 on CR1492.  The park only has 15 sites, arranged in a “U” shape around a 5-acre meadow, with trees, grass, and a deer feeder.  The sites Priddy Meadow4are all back-in up against the tree line, gravel with a slope up to the trees, with gravel and grass.  Hookups are convenient and include free cable with a full channel HD lineup.  Verizon cell and 4G worked well, and there were no obstructions to the rooftop satellite.  There are no amenities at this park, no restrooms, pool, playground etc., and there are a few long term residents.  The owner is a delightful lady who has a list of reasonable rules, and considers it her mission to make your stay enjoyable.  She and her parents live on site and check with guests frequently.  The meadow is filled with deer each morning and evening, and there are plenty of birds in the area.  Quiet, secure, and convenient – a great place to stay in the Hill Country.  Monthly rate of $335 plus electric.  Priddy Meadow RV Park

Stone Creek RV Park, Schertz, TX

Stay Date:  Oct 2013
Our Rating:  BAD – 4
Stone Creek2We were very disappointed in this park. Although we had planned to stay throughout the winter, we left after thStone Creek3ree weeks due to our dissatisfaction with the site, the area, and the environment. While others have had a positive experience, it is likely that they were placed in the upper loop which has larger, better developed sites and is close to the pool and laundry. Our site, in the lower loop, was narrow with a mix of grass and weeds, and had a light pole in the middle which prevented the use of our awning. We thought it ironic that on making the reservation we were asked the condition of our motorhome, and yet the trailer next to us had enough mold covering the sides to grow mushrooms. Stone Creek4We would have been embarrassed to entertain visitors, since they would have to drive past the ramshackle mobile homes ringing the sites, many with junk stored on outside decks. Train noise was constant and significant, especially at night, and during the day the noise from a nearby shooting range was a distraction. The cable TV was unusable, and the WiFi worked well only during the day when the many permanent residents were at work. Verizon cell and 4G worked well, and with only small trees, there was no problem with a rooftop satellite antenna. We found the weekday hosts to be efficient but largely disinterested. We’ve spent five winters in the San Antonio area and have been disappointed in the lack of quality parks in the area, and unfortunately this was no exception. We can’t recommend it and won’t stay here again.  $36 Night/$405+ Electric Monthly  Stone Creek RV Park

Fort Stockton RV Park, Fort Stockton, TX

Stay Date:  Multiple, Last Date April 2012

Our Rating:  GOOD – 7

This is a regular stop for us in this part of Texas and while not a resort, the park provides everything needed for an overnight stay. Much depends on which site is assigned, since some are sandy and short, while others that front the entrance road are long and shaded. Hookups work well and Verizon cell and data were good. The cafe offers a limited menu, and it and the office are staffed by friendly folks; we enjoy not having to cook or unhook to drive to town. This isn't an area of quality parks, be we've stayed here many times and always been well pleased. Reasonable at $25/night (with discounts).  Fort Stockton RV Park

Fort Sam Houston Travel Park, San Antonio, TX

Stay Date:  March 2012

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

Fort Sam Travel CampGetting to the park is an exercise in pothole and maintenance cone avoidance, but once on the post the roads, while bumpy, are fairly well maintained. The park itself is extremely well maintained; level concrete pull-through sites and large patio with table and grill, convenient hookups, and lots of room. Propane is availableFort Sam Travel Camp2 M-F and there are a few RV items in the store. A very large commissary and PX are within a 20-minute drive through the post.  There is no park Wi-Fi or cable, but you're in the middle of a metropolitan area so there is plenty of broadcast TV, and our Verizon data card was on 4G during our stay. If you have mail forwarded, be prepared to navigate a maze of warehouses and loading docks to find the mail room - we opted for the main post office instead. It's one of the best parks in the military, but what makes it less desirable for us is the the train noise. Be prepared for all day, all night trains loudly sounding their horns as they pass within 1/2 mile of the park.  Very reasonable at $17/night.  Fort Sam Houston Travel Park

Southern Oaks Luxury RV Resort, Aransas Pass TX

Stay Date:  February 2012
Southern Oaks RV ParkBilled as a “Luxury RV Resort”, this park is nice, but not exceptional.  Although we had made reservations a year in advance, new ownership had changed our site to one less desirable, and in an attempt to make it up, gave us a site in the “owner’s area”.  Our site was level concrete with plenty of room around us, but the area has many owners who are building permanent storage units, and the constant construction traffic and building noise was constant and distracting.  No cable or free WiFi, and the Tengo WiFi charge was ridiculously high.  Verizon cell and Aircard service was good.  Located on the highway 35 bypass, the park is a compromise location; not close to anything but a convenient distance from Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, and Rockport.  There are equal or better parks more conveniently located, and if we return to the area, we’ll stay elsewhere.  Pricy for what you get at $400/mo plus electric.  Southern Oaks Luxury RV Resort.

Fort Bliss RV Park, El Paso TX

Stay Date:  April 2011
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
Ft Bliss RV ParkEl Paso doesn't offer much in the way of quality parks, but even if it did, this park would stand out above the others. Paved interior roads, concrete sites and pads, sparkling restrooms, and a beautiful community center make this place special. Check-in was quick and friendly, and using our Golden Access pass resulted in a $12 day fee. Hookups are all centralized and work well. If given a choice, opt for the old section, which has trees and some shade; the new section has small trees and no picnic tables yet. Ft Bliss RV Park2The post is a short drive and has an amazing shopping area, the "Freedom Center", with huge PX, numerous shops, a 10-screen theater with first-run movies for $5, and restaurants, including a Buffalo Wild Wings. El Paso isn't exactly picturesque, but Sunland Park on the West side has good shopping and a casino. Surprisingly, the city claims it is the safest large city in America even though the border to Juarez is very close. No problem in the park, it's fenced and patrolled by military police. A great stay - the best in the area by far. Daily rate $14, $2 off per day with Golden Access (Geezer) Pass  Fort Bliss RV Park

Fort Stockton RV Park

Stay Date:  March 2011
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
This park continues its place as the best stop in the area, and was filled during our stay. Long pull through sites, some trees, and an excellent cafe make this a preferred stay for many travelers. Free Wi-Fi worked well. Nice pool, hiking trail, and office/laundry. Very friendly and professional check-in, but reserve early in the day if you hope to get a site.  It’s a few miles East of town, but don’t worry, you’re not missing anything by avoiding Fort Stockton.  Reasonable at $27/night.  Fort Stockton RV Park

Alamo Fiesta RV Resort

Stay Date:  March 2011
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Easy access to I-10, otherwise a pretty average park. Friendly check-in followed by a lengthy trip through the park to be able to maneuver into our pull-through site. Site was part concrete, part asphalt, not too level, with low tree branches that scraped the roof. Free cable and Wi-Fi. Close to the interstate with noticeable road noise. A bit pricey at $32/night, but it’s convenient to Fiesta Texas and other attractions.  Alamo Fiesta RV Resort

Broke Mill RV Park, Del Rio TX

Stay Date:  November 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Price reflects the Escapee discount. A nice park, with very friendly owners, just outside dismal Del Rio. Interior roads are paved with gravel pads and small trees. Hookups are in the back of the long pull through sites, so extra hoses may be needed. Free cable TV worked well, but WiFi was weak and barely usable from our site. Verizon cell service was marginal as was the Aircard. Significant road noise at night from the adjacent highway. Nice facilities and an inexpensive breakfast twice a week, but the price was a bit high for an overnight stay, $31 with Escapees 15% discount.  Broke Mill RV Park

Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area, San Angelo TX

Stay Date:  November 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
This is a well-maintained, full-service campground and RV park on Lake Nasworthy, about 10 miles from Goodfellow AFB. Interior roads are gravel, but there are concrete pads on loops that provide easy entry/departure. Sites are large, with table and most have shade. Nearby is a marina with boat rental and swimming beach. Quiet this time of year, but can be noisy during the day in the summer months. Sporadic office hours, but an on-site host will check you in. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. There's not much in the area, and this is a hidden jewel of a park, at an exceptional price.  Military or DoD ID Required.  Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area

Shady Oaks RV Park, Brownwood TX

Stay Date:  November 2010
Our Rating:  BAD – 5
Just a gravel parking lot along side the highway, this park offers nothing more than a place to overnight. Some large trees offer a bit of shade, but sites have no grass, tables, and are only identified by the hookups. Almost exclusively long term residents; we were the only transient RV during our stay. Free cable TV and good Wi-Fi, and Verizon cell was marginal and there was no Aircard service. The manager was very friendly, and the park is convenient to shopping and dining in Brownwood. This is the only park in town, and next time we'll adjust our schedule to avoid overnighting in the area.  Brownwood RV Park

Davis Mountains State Park, Fort Davis TX

Stay Date:  Multiple, last November 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
RV from OverlookThis is one of Texas' best state parks - large sites with picnic pavilions and fire rings, full hookups with cable TV, and a great scenic drive. Paved interior roads and sites, but sites are not always level.  No Verizon cell phone but strangely, Aicard worked (but slowly); and  the Indian lodge (which has a fair restaurant) has free WiFi. Most sites have a clear shot to the satellite.  This is a great destination park and also a good place from which to visit McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis National Historic Site, and the "Marfa Mystery Lights". Fort Davis has a fair variety of restaurants, one grocery store, and two gas stations; all  are pricey so stock up before arrival. This is the part of Texas we saw in the old Westerns – mountain vistas, rocky canyons, miles of sage brush, and you’ll see deer and Javelina while you’re there.   A great place to stay, full hookup sites are a steal at $20/night.  Davis Mountains State Park

Big Cypress RV Park, Pittsburg TX

Stay Date:  November 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
Big Cypress RV Park1 What a find!  A pretty park with nice sites, good hookups, and and a new, free laundry for the Passport America rate of $12.50/night.  Gravel interior roads and pads, terraced slightly but level, with grass, newly-planted trees, and a table.  Long pull-thrus are in the middle and have a clear view of the sky for the satellite, large back-in sites have trees and shade.  No cable TV, but good Big Cypress RV Park2 free WiFi.  Nice little laundry with two each washer/dryers are free.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well.  Very quiet and peaceful, no road noise.  Not a family destination park, but a great place to spend a few days.  The owner and host are friendly and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant.  Cash or checks only.  Big Cypress RV Park

Post View RV Park, Post TX

Stay Date:  March 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
The Passport America rate of $12.50/night helped elevate the rating of this park.  While not a destination park, it serves the purpose of a good overnight stop. Big, level pull-thrus, 50A power, and quiet at night. On a dusty 1/4 mile road; watch for the park on the left. Verizon Aircard and phone service was very good. No cable or WiFi, but clear shot to satellite.  Very informal check-in; if no one is around, drop the money in a slot. Owner is very friendly and the Passport America rate is a bargain.  Post View RV Park

Camp Huaco Springs, New Braunfels, TX

Stay Date:  Multiple, Last March 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
This has become our winter home for a three or four month stay.  The low monthly rate View From River($295) includes full hookups (50A) – a real bargain.  The sites are very large, and the area is quiet during the winter months. Hookups are unique; each site is three lanes wide with hookups at each side. This allowed us to pull in nose-first with a great view overlooking the cypress-lined Guadalupe River. Sites have a large cement patio, picnic table, and barbecue on a stand. The area is generally quiet except for motorcycles on the adjacent River Road, and was only a Riverview1bit crowded once the state began stocking trout every Friday in December. The staff was very friendly, there is a small store, and WiFi (weak & spotty) is free. Verizon cell and Air Card worked very well, and there’s a clear shot to the satellite. Just a short 3 miles from  Nw Braunfels which has all amenities, and less than an hour from downtown San Antonio and the fabulous RiverWalk. No pets, glass, or Styrofoam allowed along the river, but during the winter small pets are allowed in the RV area. This is a huge "toobing" area during the summer and is crowded and noisy. Junction KOA, Junction TX

Stay Date:  Multiple, last stay March 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
While as full timers we don't normally stay at KOAs, this park has become an exception; its large sites, tree-covered location next to a river, quiet setting, and security gate make it a great overnight stay. Level gravel pull thru sites.  Good free Wi-Fi (for a change) and OK cable.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, and there’s a clear shot at the satellite.  Friendly owners, and the campground ducks also were a plus. Not cheap, like all KOAs, at $44/night.  Junction KOA

Saddleback Mountain RV Park, Balmorhea TX

Stay Date:  December 2009
Our Rating:  GOOD –7
There’s not much around this park, it’s purely an overnight stop only.  But for the MH in Snow at Balrmohea$10/night Passport America rate, it’s a bargain.  Long pull-thru sites, 50A power, water, sewer, and even a bit of landscaping.  The truck stop check-in is a dump, but the park area is far enough away that the noise isn’t too bad.  No cable TV, WiFi, or any amenities, just a level dirt site.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, and in this part of Texas there aren’t any trees that would block a rooftop satellite.  We were glad to get off the road since it snowed, a rarity in this area.   Don’t believe the web site – this is an overnight stop only.  Saddleback Mountain RV Park

Marathon Motel & RV Park, Marathon TX

Stay Date:  February 2009
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Let's face it - if you want to visit Big Bend with a full hookup site and services Marathon is the only choice; so it's a good thing this park is very nice. We were given the last space available, which was apparently a former workamper site - no pad, picnic table, and only gravel/dirt which was not very level. The standard 50A sites were pull-thru, also dirt/gravel without pads. The free cable TV and WiFi worked well, and Verizon service was good for the cell and Aircard. There is a beautifully landscaped courtyard and fireplace and the owners are exceptionally friendly. Marathon is an interesting little town; a couple of good restaurants, and the Gage Hotel is worth a visit. We'd stay here again. Marathon Motel & RV Park
