Orange Grove RV Park, Bakersfield CA

Stay Date:  Nov 2016

Our Rating:  Good – 9

Orange Grove RV ParkProfessional staff at check in, even gave us hints on which oranges to pick. This time of year the trees were full of fruit, and we were told to Orange Grove RV Park2pick as much as we wanted. Sites are long level gravel pull-thrus with trees and table. Extensive cable, good OTA, and no obstructions to satellites. Orange Grove RV Par3Very good WiFi and good Verizon cell/data. East of the urban area with easy access and quiet and dark at night. A very nice stay, we'll visit again.  Pricy but worth the $43/night.  Orange Grove RV Park

Shady Grove RV Park, Alamogordo NM

Stay Date:  Oct 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

Shady Grove1Alamogordo doesn’t offer much in the way of quality RV Parks, but this is a nice park at a very reasonable price.  We spent a month here; the long, level pull-thrus had a nice-sized tree for shade, a gravel patio, and a table. Shady Grove2 Acceptable cable TV, some OTA channels, and no obstructions to TV satellites.  The WiFi worked well, and we had good Verizon cell/data.  Not in the best neighborhood, but with easy access to the highway with little road noise.  Shady Grove3Close to Alamogordo’s shopping with easy access to Tularosa, Cloudcroft, and Ruidoso.  Friendly manager and owner.  Monthly rate of $300 included electric.  Shady Grove RV Park

Edgington RV Park, Alamogordo NM

Stay Date:  Oct 2016
Our Rating:  UGLY – 2
Edginton RV Alamogordo1We really wanted to like this park; the new owner was friendly, outgoing, and very helpful. But the deteriorating appearance, road noise, and trashy permanent resident area was just too much of negative for us to stay again.Edginton RV Alamogordo2 Sites are gravel and share the curbside area, with no picnic table or trees. Our site's electrical was jury rigged with a wobbly 50A box linked to an extension cord. No cable, but good OTA selection and few obstacles to the satellites. Spotty WiFi but good Verizon cell/data.  Edginton RV Alamogordo3We watched as a resident's dog wandered around and marked his territory on our tires and a cat used the site for a litter box. We can't recommend or stay here again.  Passport America rate is $18//night.  Edgington RV Park

Cactus RV Park, Tucumcari NM

Stay Date:  Oct 2016

Our Rating:  Good – 7

Tucumcari, NM1Other reviewers haven’t been as kind, but for us the park consistently provides a good overnight stay at a reasonable price. Much depends on the site you’re assigned, so try and get a pull-thru under the trees.  Friendly check-in and escort to our site, a long, level gravel pull-thru with shade. Convenient hookups, quiet location, and walking distance to a good restaurant. Tucumcari, NM2Extensive analog cable TV, and most sites have a clear view of satellites. Good Verizon cell/data, and the park WiFi worked well. Can be a bit dusty as RVs arrive/depart, but overall well worth the price.  Reasonable at $25/night.  Cactus RV Park

Ellsworth AFB Famcamp, Box Elder SD

Stay Date:  Sept 2016

Our Rating:  Bad – 5

We've found in our travels that many military campgrounds are an afterthought to MWR when it comes to management, and after two visits this year we've had it confirmed here. Our first visit earlier this year, we never saw the host during a three week stay. This time, we were assigned a site when making the phone reservation, only to find out after we had arrived and set up (no one answered the host phone) that we had to move for a "long term camper" in spite of there being many empty sites. We moved and watched as the site we moved from was occupied for one night and then was vacant. In addition to having to move for no reason other then incompetent scheduling, the price of $28/night with no weekly or monthly rate is unreasonable for a military location of this average quality. We've found better locations in the Rapid City area for less, which removes Ellsworth as a military benefit.  Overpriced at $28/night.  Ellsworth AFB Famcamp

Cedar Shore Resort, Oacoma SD

Stay Date:  Sept 2016

Our Rating:  UGLY!!!! – 3

Cedar Shore1We were disappointed to find that unlike the description on the web site, this park is a below average campground instead of a "resort". Check in was in a small office where we noticed that the single washer/dryer were too dirty to use. Cedar Shore2We were assigned a pull-thru site that faced uphill and was sloped to the point of being unable to level without raising the rear wheels off of the ground. Sites are dirt with ragged grass and small trees. We watched as two other RVs gave up trying to get level and drove around to find a site they could use. Cedar Shore3Also frustrating was to see the empty pull-thru sites facing the river that were reasonably level and that sat empty. Cable TV was basic eleven channels and fuzzy analog. WiFi was weak and would not connect. At this nightly rate we expected at least average service and were disappointed. Probably a good spot to stay long-term, as the back-in sites were paved and level, but for the short term there are better options.  A rip off at $42/night  Cedar Shore Resort

Camp America, Salem SD

Stay Date:  Sept 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD –7

Campground AmericaWe arrived on a crowded holiday weekend to find our reserved pull-thu site was occupied and unavailable; however, the very friendly and helpful manager closed the office to personally guide us into a site that allowed us to keep our tow vehicle attached. Campground America2Older, small park with tight turns on the interior gravel roads, but level gravel sites and lots of trees and grass. Hookups were OK, and although no cable, OTA received 10 channels and we found an open spot to use our tripod satellite mount.Campground America3 Verizon cell/data were good, and the park WiFi was intermittent due to the large number of people in the park. Very quiet at night due to location well off the Interestate, but still convenient to access.  $31/Night  Camp America

Randall Creek Recreation Area, Pickstown SD

Stay Date:  Sept 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

Randall CreekThis is a large recreation area along the banks of the Missouri River just below Randall Dam. Paved interior roads wind through trees and some turns can be tight. Some paved sites, many gravel are generally large and well spaced. Randall Creek3Most sites are shaded, and there are large areas of grass, hiking next door at Fort Randall NP, and access points for fishing in the river. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and firewood is available in the park. Very popular with fisherman and reservations are a must since the check-in booth is seldom open, but web site has photos of each site. Randall Creek2No OTA TV but most sites have access to the TV satellites. Verizon cell service was good but data was slow. Large dump station and water available near restrooms. Without an annual State Park pass, an additional fee of $6 per vehicle is charged. Noisy and busy during the weekend, but very quiet during the week.  Camping plus entry fee results in $25/night.  Randall Creek Recreation Area.

Area Tips:  Fort Randall National Historic Site adjacent to the park is worth a visit.  Up the road, the Fort Randall Casino is a nice place to play the slots or have a bite to eat.

Crystal Springs RV Park, Ellendale MN

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

Crystal Springs1Beautifully laid out park, with back-in sites on the lake. Gravel interior roads and large, level gravel sites. Convenient hookups, good WiFi, and Verizon cell/data were strong. Crystal Springs3Good OTA TV and clear shot to satellites. Although not far from the interstate, large trees and landscaping kept noise to a minimum. Beware that are no signs to the park; the dirt entry road is just past the northbound exit road of I-35; you'll parallel the interstate south for .5 miles to the park entrance. Crystal Springs2Call on arrival since there is no office; someone will come by to collect the fee (check or cash). Lots of nice grass, plenty of space between sites, and a beautiful lake to fish. A great place to spend time.  Reasonably priced at $30/night.  Crystal Springs RV Park

Jackpot Junction RV Park, Morton MN

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 9

Jackpot Junction1We enjoyed our three-day stay here. Enter the casino loop & park just short of the park. Go to the player's club first and get a card to reduce the price to $25/night. Jackpot Junction2Then to the "tours" window to pay and get a site. We found the tours and campground host to be very friendly and helpful. The park is well laid out and easy to enter. Paved interior roads with large, level concrete pads and a patio with built-in table and a fire ring with grill. Grass covered spacious sites and solid hookups. Jackpot Junction3The cable was extensive and very clear, and there are no obstructions to the satellites. The WiFi was slow to moderate throughout our stay, and Verizon cell/data was good. No bathroom facilities at the park except porta-johns although plans are in the works to build a restroom/shower area. Overall, a pleasant stay - quiet, dark at night, and reasonably priced.  Jackpot Junction RV Park

Area Tips:  The Charles Lindberg museum and home are worth a visit in the nearby town of Redwood Falls.

Camp Ripley National Guard Post, MN

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 9

Camp Ripley1Quiet, heavily treed, with huge sites spaced well apart, this park is a perfect getaway. Level, wide concrete pads, 50A power and water, with a convenient dump station at the exit. Camp Ripley2Fire rings and free firewood, large table, a short walk to the Mississippi River. Good WiFi, acceptable Verizon cell/data, and while there is no cable or clear area for satellites, we received nine OTA channels. Camp Ripley3Very quiet post, and except for the mosquitoes, a perfect place to spend a day or two.  An added bonus was the laundries – four large ones on base and all free. Camp Ripley4 A bargain at $17/night  Camp Ripley NG Post

Leech Lake COE Campground, Federal Dam, MN

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 10

Leech Lake1This is the kind of park you wish for as a traveler - beautiful large sites in a park like setting. Paved interior roads are narrow but doable in a large motor home. Leech Lake2Our full-hookup site had a large table and fire ring, and backed up to the forest. No WiFi or cable, but Verizon cell/data worked well and although there are lots of trees, we were able to find the satellites with a tripod mount. Leech Lake4Extremely well maintained by a large cadre of friendly volunteers, quiet at night, and even free firewood from downed trees. An enjoyable stay and very reasonable using the Golden Access pass. Leech lake3Only a few full hookup sites, so reservations are a must.  Nothing within 30 miles so stock up before coming here.  One of the few “10s” that we’ve given.  $18/night with Senior Pass.  Leech Lake COE Campground.

Northland Camping & RV Park, Superior WI

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  UGLY – 3

Northlands WI 2Suitable for an overnight stay only because of the convenient location next to the highway, this is an old park with tight but doable interior roads. Northlands WIOur pull-through, uneven gravel site was very close to our neighbor, and hookups, including electric, required walking through two inches of water and mud. The sites had a distinct sewer odor, and there were gnats and mosquitoes everywhere. The office lady was very nice, but the office and "bar" had an odor of mildew and stale beer that kept our visit to a minimum. Northlands WI3No WiFi except at the office, but our Verizon cell/data worked well. No cable TV, but no obstructions to the satellites and a decent OTA selection. Crowded and noisy on our weekend stay, but fairly quiet at night with a little road noise. We'll look elsewhere if passing through the area again.  Overpriced at $34/night.  Northland Camping & RV Park

Log Cabin Resort and Campground, Curtis MI

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD - 7

Log Cabin 2This large campground has a lakefront area with beach and marina, and many shaded sites, both back-in and pull-thru. One of the few that has sewer hookups and 50A power. Log Cabin4The deluxe sites have concrete pads, tables and fire rings with generous spacing; however they are in the trees so there is no opportunity for satellite TV. We had one of the last sites available, as a result it was next to the bathrooms, whichLog Cabin 3 gave us an opportunity to meet most everybody in the park.  Back-ins are up against the tree line, on fairly level grass, and some are satellite friendly.  Cable had many channels but was grainy analog. Log Cabin RVThe park WiFi was excellent throughout our stay, and Verizon cell/data worked well. Very busy on weekends but fairly quiet during the week. Large playground for children, small office with only minimal supplies, and three miles to the small town of Curtis. We found the manager to be helpful and friendly, as were the few seasonal residents.  $32/Night.  Log Cabin Resort & Campground

Ann-Osborn Campground, Sault Ste. Marie MI

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 6

Aune Osborn1This is a crowded, busy park, and it's not about the amenities, it's about the view. Dried up grass, uneven gravel sites, no shade, 30A and shared Aune Osborn3water, but ample space between most spaces. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Waterfront view sites are booked well in advance, but you can get a glimpse of the large freighters from almost anywhere in the park. Aune Osborn2The free WiFi was unusable, but Verizon cell/data worked well. No cable, but some OTA channels and no obstructions to the satellite. Convenient to the tour boat docks, museums, and downtown.  A bit overpriced at $32/night, but it’s all about location.  Ann-Osborn Campground

Sunny’s Campground, Waseon OH

Stay Date:  Aug 2016
Our Rating:  Good – 8
Sunny's1The overnight section is a flat, grassy area with good separation between sites.  This huge park is mostly seasonals, but has a separate area of level grass full-hookup sites for transients. Sunny's2Just OK with the full rate, the park is a bargain at the Passport America rate. Our site was fairly level, hookups worked well, and the for-fee WiFi was adequate. Sunny's3No cable but a few OTA channels, and no obstructions to the satellites. Good Verizon cell/data. We were there on a weekday so it was quiet during our stay. Well worth the stop with the PA rate of $20/night.  Sunny’s Campground

Tiki RV Park & Campground, St Ignace MI

Stay Date:  Aug 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 6

Tiki RVA worthwhile stay if using Passport America or other discounts; otherwise it's a bit pricey. Sites are arranged helter-skelter, some pull-thrus but mostly back-ins. Our site was on a slope but was doable, some had their front wheels well into the air. Tiki RV1Some sites are very close together (ours was), others have adequate spacing. The dust from interior roads is significant and you can expect your vehicles to be covered each day. The free WiFi was sporadic, and while Verizon cell was weak, data worked well. TikiRV3Some areas are heavily treed, but we were able to use a tripod to receive DirecTV. Fair OTA TV. Hookups worked well except for the sewer fitting being elevated 8" above ground level. A park with a large variety of sites, and how well you enjoy your stay will depend on where you're located. Passport America rate of $22/night.  Tiki RV Park & Campground
