Stone Creek RV Park, Schertz, TX

Stay Date:  Oct 2013
Our Rating:  BAD – 4
Stone Creek2We were very disappointed in this park. Although we had planned to stay throughout the winter, we left after thStone Creek3ree weeks due to our dissatisfaction with the site, the area, and the environment. While others have had a positive experience, it is likely that they were placed in the upper loop which has larger, better developed sites and is close to the pool and laundry. Our site, in the lower loop, was narrow with a mix of grass and weeds, and had a light pole in the middle which prevented the use of our awning. We thought it ironic that on making the reservation we were asked the condition of our motorhome, and yet the trailer next to us had enough mold covering the sides to grow mushrooms. Stone Creek4We would have been embarrassed to entertain visitors, since they would have to drive past the ramshackle mobile homes ringing the sites, many with junk stored on outside decks. Train noise was constant and significant, especially at night, and during the day the noise from a nearby shooting range was a distraction. The cable TV was unusable, and the WiFi worked well only during the day when the many permanent residents were at work. Verizon cell and 4G worked well, and with only small trees, there was no problem with a rooftop satellite antenna. We found the weekday hosts to be efficient but largely disinterested. We’ve spent five winters in the San Antonio area and have been disappointed in the lack of quality parks in the area, and unfortunately this was no exception. We can’t recommend it and won’t stay here again.  $36 Night/$405+ Electric Monthly  Stone Creek RV Park

Amistar Vicksburg RV Park, Vicksburg MS

Stay Date:  Sept 2013
Our Rating:  Good – 7
Very convenient to I-20, yet quiet at night. This park is a comfortable spot for a nights stay. Located across from the Ameristar Casino, with a paved entry road and gravel interior roads and sites. All sites are pull-thrus, and are not long enough for both a 40' or larger motor home and tow without unhooking. The power pedestal was unusual in that the 50 amp plug was installed upside down, making it difficult to use with a power monitor. Good cable and Wi-Fi, and Verizon cell and data were strong. Small trees only, so a clear shot for satellite TV. A shuttle is available for the casino. We'd probably stay here again because of the convenience and price, reasonable at $27/night.  Amistar Vicksburg RV Park.

Hernando Point COE Campground, Hernando MS

Stay Date: Sept 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
Hernando Point MS 1 Another great COE park on the shores of the lake. A bit off the interstate, but worth it for a few nights. Interior roads and sites are paved, and the sites, all back-in are not as deep as most COE parks; in this case our 40' motor home just fit with our tow vehicle parked to the side. Hernando Point MS 2Many of the sites are on the lake shore, and all have large areas for the table, fire ring, and even a tent area. Power and water were good, and Verizon cell and data were weak, but usable. Lots of trees, but ample room for a tripod satellite. Beware the ants, they can be a problem, but at least they're not fire ants. An enjoyable place to stay at a great rate – only $10/night with the Golden Access pass.  Hernando Point COE Campground

Parkers Crossing RV Park, Yuma TN

Stay Date:  Sept 2013
Our Rating: GOOD – 10!
Parker's Crossing2We don't often find a solid "10" campground at such a reasonable price, but this park is without doubt one of the best we've seen. On check-in the friendly hosts welcomed us to the area with an extensive handout containing restaurant, shopping, and attraction information and maps, gave us their recommendations, and escorted us the the site. Parker's Crossing4The pull-thru site was absolutely level concrete with an attached large wood patio and table, and overlooked the fishing pond. The free cable featured over 100 channels and the Wi-Fi was solid throughout our stay. Parker's Crossing1Clear view to the DirecTV satellite and our Verizon cell and data were strong. Convenient to the Interstate, yet far enough away to be quiet. Although the new owners are still making improvements, this park is already a cut above the norm, and we'll be stopping here again.  A bargain at $26 with Good Sam discount.  Parker’s Crossing RV Park

7 Points COE Campground, Nashville TN

Stay date:  Sept 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD - 9
7 Points COE2An amazing value with the Senior Pass. Close to the attractions of Nashville, yet you feel that you're in the middle of the forest. Roads a bit narrow, and as stated backing in some of the sites can be a problem, but we had no problem with our 40' rig. Sites are paved, 7 Points COE3mostly level, and many are very deep. Ours was tree covered yet surrounded by an open grass area for the tripod satellite. Has large patio areas with table and fire rings, and most sites are well spaced for privacy. Verizon cell and data signal was strong. 7 Points COE1Note: Our GPS had us take Earhart Road to the park. South New Hope Road is a better choice: is wider and without overhanging trees. A great park, but it stays full so a reservation is a must.  A steal at $10/night with the Golden Access Pass.  7 Points COE Campground

Raccoon Valley Escapees Park, Heiskel TN

Stay Date:  Sept 2013

Our Rating:  Good – 6

Racoon Valley2We’re Escapees and enjoy staying at their parks for the friendly hosts and fellow campers, but this park was a disappointment.  Easy access from I-75, friendly check in, and an easy drive on gravel interior roads to the gravel, not too level pull-thru sites.  The sites are uncomfortably close, Racoon Valley3awnings almost touch slideouts, and there’s a half-hearted attempt at a grass strip, but your area is mostly gravel with an aged picnic table.  Quiet at night, but too many security lights keep the area bright. Cable Racoon Valley4only for long termers, and Tengo WiFi for $3/day.  Most sites are treeless so a clear shot to the satellite.  Verizon cell and data worked well.  Most long-term visitors keep their sites tidy, but a few are falling apart.  OK for a one night stay, with good access to Knoxville.  $18/night for 50A.  Raccoon Valley Escapees Park.

Bandit’s Roost COE Campground, Wilkesboro NC

Stay Date:  Sept 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
Bandit's Roost1Staying here is the best of the two worlds of camping and RV living. Most sites are good-sized and separated by trees, and all have tables, cooking tables, and fire rings. Power and water were both good, and a dump station is located on the exit route. Rooftop satellites will be a problem with all of the trees, but we were able to find a site that worked with our tripod andBandit's Roost2 portable dish. Verizon cell was strong, but data was weak and intermittent. Even on a crowded Labor Day weekend, the park was quiet at night. Easy access from the main road, interior roads are paved and sites, all back-in, are hard packed dirt and gravel. A great place to stay, and an unbeatable value at $11/night with the Senior Pass.  Bandit’s Roost COE Park

Creekside Campground, Edinburg VA

Stay Date:  August 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – just barely – 6
To get here, do not follow your GPS; follow the signs, taking a right turn when you reach the "T" at Highway 11. While it may be big rig accessible, I wouldn't call it big rig friendly. Access requires a trip down a single lane, winding road with a 10%+ downgrade, and the interior of the park is small and could pose a problem for a 40' or longer rig. Sites are mostly gravel, fairly level, and hookups are easily accessible. Free cable TV was excellent, and WiFi worked well. Heavily treed, so not much chance of using satellite. Verizon cell and data were strong. No host/manager on site; instructions are posted to leave a check, so no credit cards. A pretty place once you get parked, but too much trouble to make it worthwhile for us to make a second visit.  $30/night.  Creekside Campground

Little Mexico Campground, Winfield PA

Stay Date:  August 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD bordering BAD – 5
If only this park lived up to it’s website.  Getting to this park is an adventure; through farmland and then a narrow, winding road that at one point comes within a foot or so of a house. This is a large seasonal park with only a few full hookup, back-in sites for travelers. Interior roads are gravel, and most sites are grass. Our site was within 8' of the laundry and restroom doors, and the night-long banging of doors was an irritant, and sitting outside with all of the traffic was uncomfortable. Active and noisy on the weekend, but fairly quiet during the week. The free WiFi was weak and generally unusable. No cable, but clear shot at the satellites and Verizon cell and data were strong. Fairly well maintained, but not really suited for travelers, this park is too far off the main roads unless you're visiting someone in the area.  Passport America accepted during weekdays ($20/night), otherwise way overpriced at $39/night.  Little Mexico Campground

Woodland Campground, Woodland PA

Stay Date:  August 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
What looks to be a former KOA, the park is average in it's amenities and facilities, except that the pull-thrus are exceptionally long. Lots of seasonals ring the center where overnighters are parked, and many could use facelifts. The pond is overgrown and not all that scenic or suitable for fishing. The gravel sites were fairly level and hookups were convenient and worked well as did the free WiFi. No trees in the overnight area, so a clear shot to the satellite, and Verizon cell and data were good. Although a short drive off of I-80, the park was quiet and dark at night. A good overnight stop albeit overpriced at $36/night.  Woodland Campground

Heritage Hills Campground, Thompson OH

Stay Date:  August 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
This is a largely seasonal park located well off the Interstate, but worth the trip if you're visiting the area. A large park. The landscaping is nicely maintained with large areas of grass. Two lakes provide fishing and swimming, and there's a nice store/office. The owners are very friendly and seemed intent on making our stay memorable. The transient sites are long pull-thrus with large grass areas and trees to give more privacy than average. Wi-Fi is a fee service, except for around the office area. No cable and little broadcast, but clear views of the satellites. Verizon cell and data were strong. Warning - If coming from I-90, the signs will take you down Ledge Road for over 2 miles of dirt/dust. Instead, stay on Rt 528 to the town square, then take Thompson Road to the south entrance to Ledge Road, a portion of the dirt road much shorter and less dusty.   $35/Night.  Heritage Hills Campground

Pier-Lon Campground, Medina OH

Stay Date:  Aug 2013
Our Rating:  Good – 8
Pier-Lon1There aren't many options in this area, and this is certainly one of the best locations.  Gated, well maintained and landscaped, and with a swimming lake and activities.  We spent a week, and throughout our stay, the park remained quiet and peaceful at night, perhaps because alcohol is prohibited.  Pier-Lon2A seasonal park, the transient section is an area of grass back-ins with some gravel scattered in a random pattern.  Sites share water hookups, so pressure is often very low.  No cable, but clear shot for satellite since the trees are few and small.  Verizon cell and data were strong, and the free WiFi worked well. Pier-Lon3 Another park that insists on using the plastic speed bumps that excessively rattle your RV no matter how slow you drive over them.  Overpriced for the services, but still the best park in the area.

Sunny’s Campground, Wauseon OH

Stay Date:  Aug 2013
Our Rating:  Good – 7
This is a huge community of seasonal campers with a separate section for overnighters. Interior roads are gravel, and the pull-thru sites were grass. Good hookups and solid Wi-Fi, but no cable although most sites have a clear shot at the satellites. Verizon cell and data were good, despite being off the main roads. Although packed with seasonals, the park is well maintained, nicely landscaped, and well maintained. Lots of golf carts, but everyone seems to adhere to the speed limit of 10mph. A bit pricy for an overnight, but with facilities and activities that make it worthwhile for a longer stay.  $35/night.  Sunny’s Campground

Geneseo Campground, Geneseo IL

Stay Date:  Aug 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
This was our second overnight stay at this well-manicured, shaded park. It’s in a convenient location, a bit off the road, but worth the drive through Geneseo. Make sure you follow the blue campground signs to avoid a 10' underpass. Gravel interior roads and fairly level gravel sites, with extensive tree cover that makes using a satellite difficult. No cable, but good free WiFi. Not very crowded and quiet and dark at night. Verizon cell and data were strong. A pretty little park in the cornfields that offers a quiet night's stay. $30/night.  Geneseo Campground

Famil-E-Fun Campground, Mitchell SD

Stay Date Aug 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
Convenient to I-90, this park provides a comfortable stay with it's tree-shaded sites and quiet atmosphere. Gravel interior roads and sites that are fairly level, with hookups conveniently placed. There are only a few satellite-friendly sites and no cable TV. The free Wi-Fi worked well during our stay and Verizon cell and data were strong. The friendly and helpful owner will escort you to your site and make sure the hookups work. Shopping in Mitchell is eight miles down the road with a Cabela's and other stores. $30/night.  Famil-E-Fun Campground

Ellsworth AFB, SD

Stay Date:  July 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Ellsworth Famcamp1We enjoyed past visits here and were looking forward to a stay in the new area, which has long concrete pull-thrus. As opposed to the old area with paved interior roads and grassy sites, the new area for now at least, has gravel roads, and no shade or grass. Ellsworth Famcamp3Weeds have been allowed to grow unchecked and some are over 2' tall and have to be waded through to get to your entry door. Hopefully the sites will be landscaped when the rest of the construction is finished. We understand that there’s been some turmoil in the host’s status but that the new host is doing a great job.  Reservations are possible and a good idea here, although there is an overflow area with 30A service.  No cable TV, but good broadcast and clear shot to the satellites. Verizon cell and data worked well, as did the park free Wi-Fi. A quiet base, Ellsworth has a good commissary and marginal BX, and provides security and a nice place to stay while visiting the area.  Easy access through the commercial or main gate.  Very reasonable at $20/night.  Ellsworth AFB Famcamp

Sunrise Campground, Bozeman MT

Stay Date:  April 2013
Our Rating:  Good – 7
We'd like to rate this park higher; the owners are the friendliest, most accommodating people we've encountered and the rate is very reasonable. Sunrise CampgroundAlas, the train noise and cramped sites are an annoyance, and this park is best served for an overnight only. The free Wi-Fi worked well, and Verizon cell and data were strong. There's no cable TV and trees could be a problem for the satellite, so ask for a site with a clear view when checking in. The sites share central hookups and are close together. Road noise is noticeable, but not loud enough to disturb our sleep as did the trains. Easy access to I-90 and the downtown area.  Reasonable at $29/night.  Sunrise Campground

Jim & Mary’s RV Park, Missoula MT

Stay Date:  April 2013
Our Rating:  Good – 8
Snow in MissoulaWe're willing to give the park a good rating for appearance since we've visited in the summer and it's beautiful. In this time of year, it's a bit bleak, and there isn't much maintenance going on. As a result of the sparse foliage, the train noise in "A" row, where the pull-thru sites are located, is significant enough to affect your sleep. Hopefully they'll clean the permanents up in the summer also, since the piles of belonging is becoming unsightly. But there are so many good aspects of this park; friendly hosts, nice lounge and laundry, free Wi-Fi that worked well, and free limited cable TV. Verizon cell and data were strong, and because of the leafless trees, we were able to find the satellite - something not to be expected during the summer. Not as convenient to Missoula as the KOA, but a bit less expensive.  Easy access to the Interstate, and don't miss the Wheat Montana bakery in the corner truck stop. A nice stay, just a little far from town.  $38/night.  Jim & Mary’s RV Park

Fairchild AFB Famcamp, Spokane WA

Stay Date:  April 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
Fairchild Famcamp1This is one of the better military campgrounds; nothing fancy, just long level pull-thrus, good hookups, good free Wi-Fi, all in a quiet setting. This time of year there's no host and only half of the Famcamp is open, and although it's the side with the trees, satellite reception is still good since they're mostly bare. Good Verizon cell and data, solid hookups. Fairchild Famcamp2Base aircraft fly infrequently, and even at night they're relatively quiet. Not much close to the base, but a five-mile drive takes you to a Wal-Mart and a large casino. Nice commissary, walking trails, and BX complex. Worth the moderate trip off the interstate.  Very reasonable at $17/day, $100 Week.  Fairchild AFB Famcamp

Yakama Nation RV Park, Toppenish WA

Stay Date: April 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Yakama RV Park2During this time of year the park is almost empty; we had a large back-in corner site with a large grass and treed area and virtually no neighbors. The office staff was very professional and helpful during our stay, and all the amenities worked well, including the free Wi-Fi. No cable at our site, but clear shot to satellite, and Verizon cell and data worked well. Yakama RV Park3All interior roads are paved and sites are level asphalt. Walking distance to the Yakama Nation cultural center with an interesting museum, gift shop, and restaurant. The casino is too far to walk to, but during the summer a shuttle is furnished. We found the casino to be average, although the seafood buffet was very good. Road noise was insignificant to us, but it may be a problem depending on which part of this large park you're in. Propane was very inexpensive and easy to access, and down the road is a tribal fuel stop with good prices. Not a lot to do in the local area, but an enjoyable park worth staying at. Winter rate of $25/night with 7th night free.  Yakama Nation RV Park

Whispering Pines RV Park, Cle Elum WA

Stay Dates:  March 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Whispering Pines1This is a small park with only a few sites suitable for big rigs, and although the interior road is a bit tight, with care you can maneuver into one of the two or three long grass and gravel pull-thrus. Our site had a nice grass area, shade, and a table.  Lots of trees, but a fairly clear shot for the satellite, with fair Verizon cell and data reception. The free cable TV was extensive and clear. Whispering Pines2Fairly quiet, with a few long term RVs and friendly owners/hosts and a large store. Considering that there are no sewer hookups or WiFi, the nightly rate is at the top end of what we would expect for a park with few amenities. Anyone with a rig over 32' should probably call ahead for reservations since the larger sites are few. Winter rate of $29/night.  Whispering Pines RV Park

Fildago Bay RV Resort, Anacortes, WA

Stay Date:  March 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
Fildago Bay1The park has two areas; we stayed in the upper area which was lower in price but had pull-in waterview sites. Interior roads and sites are gravel and fairly level, and while we no one on either side, it would be very tight when full as sites are very narrow. The free WiFi was surprisingly strong throughout our stay, and the cable TV was limited but adequate. Fildago Bay2The upper area has many long-term residents but their sites were in the interior and kept clear of outside items. A paved walking path runs through the park and out into the bay and is open to dog walkers. The view includes a small marsh, Fildago Bay, and Mount Baker and the Cascades in the distance.  Road noise can be troublesome, but tapers off at night. The entry Fildago Bay3road is narrow and very rough, but has little traffic, and to exit you must drive toward town and then back to the highway. All in all a pleasant park that's convenient to Anacortes and Whidbey Island. A good value at the winter rate of $27/night.  Fildago Bay RV Resort

Gilgal Oasis RV Park, Sequim WA

Stay Date:  March 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
We enjoyed our stay at this compact, well-staffed park. Sites and interior roads are paved, fairly level, and each has a nice grassy area and picnic table. Maneuvering through the park's interior is a bit tricky, but doable. Fairly good WiFi is now available throughout the park, and a DSL hookup is available for free at each site, with cables available at the office. The free cable was extensive and clear. Hookups were adequate although the water pressure was a bit low. The owners and hosts are very friendly and host a pot luck each month. The lounge area and laundry are nicely maintained and the washers and dryers are reasonable. A plus is being within walking distance of the small downtown area and nearby fast food restaurant. A great little park, and reasonable for the $375/mo rate (+electric).  Gilgal Oasis RV Park
