This was our second stop in six months here as we continue to try (and get blown out by weather) and visit Wheeler Peak.  Easy access to the highway, nice enough staff, and long sites.  A small patch of grass, table, and shade trees at each site.  Good cable TV, adequate WiFi, and strong Verizon cell/data.  Not great for satellites but some OTA channels. Nothing much to say about the park, except road noise is fairly significant at night.  $28/night with Good Sam Discount.  Valley View RV Park

Area Tips:  We found the downtown casinos and restaurants to be old and smelly with cigarette smoke.  Try the Prospector Hotel and Casino and it’s Margarita restaurant; a nice little casino and really good Mexican food. 

Young’s RV Park, Caliente NV

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

This was our second trip to Young’s RV park.  Our brief stop last fall convinced us that there was enough to do in the area for a return trip.  The park is family owned, and the manager is friendly and helpful.  While nothing fancy, the park has everything we need for a convenient stay, at a great price.  Sites are long, level gravel with a small tree and table, and there’s a nice view of the mountains through the windshield. The free WiFi was excellent, Verizon cell/data were strong, and there were no obstructions to the satellite.  There’s also an older area with large shade trees and full hookups, but we opted for the mountain view sites.  Lots to do in the area, and a perfect place to stay.  A great rate at $25/night.  Young’s RV Park

Area Tips:  Caliente is a short distance from Rainbow Canyon, a 20-mile paved drive through beautiful rock formations and scenery.  Don’t miss Kershaw-Ryan State Park, a hidden oasis with beautiful grounds.  Take a trip to Cathedral Gorge State Park and Pioche, both worth a visit.  The two local restaurants (Knotty Pine and Branding Iron) are horrible – stick to Pioneer Pizza and JJ’s Fast Food.

We’re frequent visitors to this park since it’s often on our spring or fall route.  It’s never failed to be a comfortable, affordable stay.  This time we arrived when all of the full-hookup spots were full, and even though we had a reservation, we spent ten days in the partial hookup area.  The overflow, or partial hookup area is a number of circles, with trees in the middle, where RVs are parked end to end, six or eight to a circle.  Two sites share one power pedestal, with one 50A and one 30A, so whoever gets there first gets their pick. Water hookups are also shared, but there are no sewer hookups.  It’s comfortable, and the downside was a trip to the dump station every five or six days.  When we moved to a full-hookup site, it was the standard back-in on a circle, giving us plenty of room to spread out.  The only complaint we had is that the system for moving to the full hookup area is not very transparent; it was never clear to us when we would be able to move, even when we saw empty sites.  But still, the professionalism of the staff, laundry and recreation room, and security made this a great stay.  The good news is that a large expansion is planned, and if funding remains stable, it will mean another 80 full hookup sites.  With the new “loop” around the north and west side of town being more accessible to the base, it’s easy to get around to shopping and dining.  Always a quality stay – $22/night for a full hookup site.  Desert Eagle Famcamp

Area Tips:  With the new 216 Loop, it’s easy to access the Northern and Western suburbs with their shopping and their casinos.  Also, when leaving Nellis, turn north on Nellis Blvd to Hollywood (just short of the speedway) and you’ll hit a PETRO truck stop, right next to I-15.  We like the Station Casinos, Monday military specials and inexpensive buffets.  The base commissary is great, the BX large but not cheap.  There’s a small shoppette just past the RV Park.  If you’re visiting the strip, park at the Westgate Hotel, just off Sahara, and take the monorail from their station.  It’s fast, cheap, and convenient.

Young’s RV Park, Caliente, NV

Caliente is a small town in the midst of a beautiful area, and this park has great views of the surrounding mountains.  At the south end of town with easy access, check in was with the very friendly and helpful owner.  Interior roads and sites are gravel, with small trees planted in the rear of the sites.  Convenient hookups and plenty of room between sites.  No cable TV, but clear shot to TV satellites.  The park WiFi worked well, and Verizon cell/data were good.  Some long-term residence but not much clutter.  Quiet at night with no road noise.  Lots to see in the area, and we’ll be back.  With Passport America the first night is 50% off, all others 10%.  A great place at $23/night.  Young’s RV Park

Valley View RV Park

Convenient to the highway, with fairly level gravel pull-throughs near the front of the park. Friendly folks at check-in. A bit tricky navigating the pull-through between the trees for big rigs, but doable. Trees blocked the satellite, but there were plenty of OTA channels available and a an extensive cable selection. Verizon cell and data were strong, and the park WiFi worked well. Plenty of truck noise throughout the night, otherwise a quality stay.  OK price at $27/night.  Valley View RV Park

Sparks Marina RV Resort, Sparks, NV

Lots of places use the term “resort” but this is truly one that earns the title.  Check I under the portico across from the pool, indoor hot tub, rec room and lounge, then get an escort to your site.  Paved streets and pads, artificial grass between sites, picnic table with grill area, and a shade tree, with parking next to your rig.  Sites are not large, but are laid out so that there’s a comfortable area for the table and to lounge in chairs under the tree.  Good cable, solid WiFi, and clear shot to TV satellites, with strong Verizon cell and 4G.  Convenient to a large shopping area with all the restaurants, i.e., BJ’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Outback, etc. and on the corner be sure and visit Sinbad’s Hot Dogs, some of the best ever.  Down the street is the Western Casino with fairly loose slots and a great restaurant, Pancho and Willy’s.  One of our top three places in the country, for good reason.  Worth the price at $46/night.  Sparks Marina RV Resort

Tonopah Station RV Park, Tonopah NV

Based on previous reviews, we didn't expect much, and it lived up to our expectations. Arriving at 3:00, there were only two spots open, most taken up by long-term residents. Tight, sloping sites, just long enough for a 40' RV and small SUV tow. The good news is that our site had a 50A plug - the bad news was that it was upside down, a bit of a problem with our surge guard. But it worked, as did the water, and there was a sewer hookup. Lots of traffic through the area as residents cut through the parking lot on their way to the casino and supermarket next door. Lots of bright lights for security so we felt fairly safe, and it was quiet throughout the night. If you plan to stay, get there early; we watched at least a dozen RVs drive through looking for a space. Free WiFi actually worked well, and Verizon cell and data were good. No cable or broadcast TV, but nothing to block a satellite. The casino is historic (old) with a lot of cigarette smoke, and we passed on the restaurant. Not a scenic stop, but fulfills the need for a midway rest between Reno and Las Vegas.  Priced right at $21/night.  Tonopah Station RV Park

Our favorite place to stay when passing through the area.  A true resort, you park under the portico and are escorted to your site, complete with AstroTurf, small shade tree and table.  Sites are adequate in size and have room for parking adjacent to your RV.  The staff is unfailingly friendly and professional, and the landscaping is meticulously maintained.  The clubhouse has exercise equipment, ping-pong tables, a pool, and hot tub.  An immaculate laundry and small store are also available.  Free cable and WiFi were excellent, and there’s broadcast TV and clear views of satellites.  Verizon cell and 4G worked well.  Located in a quiet area, with a large shopping complex down the street, with many restaurants and a nearby casino.  Can’t imagine any way to improve this place.  Winter rate a bargain at $29.  Sparks Marina RV Resort.

Sunrise Valley RV Park, Mina NV

This is the best…..and only RV park in Mina, a convenient stop when traveling from Las Vegas to Reno/Sparks.  In the middle of nowhere, it’s an oasis with shady sites and good hookups.  The pull-thru sites are extra long with a picnic table and fire ring (although I don’t know where you’d find wood), and hookups work well.  No cable, but no obstruction to satellite, and good WiFi.  Verizon cell and data were marginal and barely worked.  Nothing in this town of less than a hundred, so plan on eating in.  A nice place to stop with a friendly owner.  A nice stay at $27.50/night.  Sunrise Valley RV Park

Sparks Marina RV Resort is in our top three when it comes to the quality of amenities – although the sites are not large, they’re designed so that you can have plenty of room sitting under the tree on the artificial turf on the forward portion of your site.  Exceedingly professional and friendly staff, with escort to your site and assistance in setting up if needed.  Nice office/store, exercise room and pool, with free cable and WiFi that worked until the park became crowded.  Good Verizon cell and 4G, and no obstructions to the satellite.  Ideally located – just off I-80, but quiet, and near a huge area of shopping and dining.  Our preferred place to stay anytime we’re in the area.  Reasonable during the winter rate (Oct-Apr) at $176/week, otherwise a bit pricey.  Sparks Marina RV Resort

Desert Eagle RV Park, Nellis AFB, NV

Not all military campgrounds are built by people who understand RVs, but Desert Eagle is the exception.  Easy to access from I-15, the park is across from the main base near the housing area and hospital.  After easy check-in, we were escorted to our site, a long, large concrete pull-thru surrounded by trees.  The sites are spaced widely, and with the trees the sites have a sense of privacy seldom experienced.  Hookups worked fine, Verizon cell and 4G were good, and the park WiFi generally worked well.  No obstructions to the satellite, and good broadcast TV.  There’s daily jet noise, but little or no flying at night, so no interruptions to a quiet night’s sleep.  Friendly staff, great commissary, good location – one of the best military parks around.  No weekly rate but still very reasonable at $22/night.  Desert Eagle RV Park

This park doesn't have to be this nice; after all, it's the only place in the middle of nowhere. But it is, and we always enjoy our stay here. The owner is friendly, there's some interesting aviation memorabilia, long, long, pull-through sites, and even some shade. Verizon cell worked OK, but data was too slow to be usable. We had no problem getting a DirecTV signal. A bit of road noise at night, but not enough to be a distraction. Maybe not the best park you'll stay in, but it's comfortable, affordable, and a convenient stop on lonely Highway 95. We'll stay here again.  Reasonable at $25/Night.  Sunrise Valley RV Park

One of the best military campgrounds in the system. Convenient to the Interstate and just across the highway from the main base with it's excellent BX and Commissary. Most sites are back in, huge, and all have concrete pads. The free Wi-Fi worked reasonably well, and Verizon cell and data service were good. The park is known for it's exceptional staff - everyone we met was friendly and helpful. A great place to stay when visiting Las Vegas.  $21/Night.  Desert Eagle Famcamp

Gold Dust West Casino RV Park, Carson City NV

A relatively quiet and secure park located on the far side of the Gold Dust Casino parking lot. All paved sites, close together with a minuscule grass area and small trees. Maneuvering with a large rig can be a bit tricky, and the pull through sites are a bit too short for the tow to remain attached. Registration is a walk across the parking lot to the casino hotel registration desk. Very friendly staff at the casino and a good restaurant with daily specials. Verizon Cell and Aircard worked well, and the park's free Wi-Fi and cable TV were also very good. If full, this park would be very cramped, but we were here during the off season and there was plenty of room. Convenient access to highway 395 and Carson City downtown.  An OK place for $30/night with Good Sam discount.  Gold Dust West Casino

Professional, friendly staff, immaculate facilities, and great location - one of our favorite RV parks. Level paved sites with a small shade tree and artificial turf, quiet at night, and with good free cable TV and Wi-Fi. Beautifully maintained pool, hot tub, recreation room, and laundry. As good as it gets in Reno, or anywhere else.  Convenient to shopping, dining, and of course, casinos.  Not cheap, but worth the price at $38/night.  Sparks Marina RV Resort

A fairly forgettable park, just a gravel parking lot with hookups.  Pull-thru spaces are ill defined from front to back, some vehicles end up sticking out into the access roads.  Sites are very close together, if there isn’t an empty spot next to you, you’ll get to know your neighbors really well.  Free good cable TV, WiFi advertised but didn’t work.  Free continental breakfast in office.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well.  Fairly noisy, and if you’re near the office the bright lights will illuminate your interior.  OK for an overnight if you’re in a pinch, but the $35/night (with Good Sam Discount) makes this place to expensive for what you get.  Double Dice RV Park

One of the great Famcamps; spacious, shaded, level concrete pads, great hookups, and free WiFi - all add up to a superior facility. Easy access to major highways.  No cable TV but clear shot to the satellite.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well.  The staff was very, very friendly and helpful; I especially appreciated the escort to the site and that the host stayed to make sure that the hookups worked. While we only stayed a week, a longer stay would start to get a bit pricey at the daily rate of $20. Our only real complaint was the billion-candlepower light right next to our spot, but hey, if you stay in the casinos all night, it won't bother you.  Military or DoD ID required.  Desert Eagle RV Park

We stopped here for an overnight stay based on previous reviews and were not disappointed. Large pull-thrus, big trees, and a nice view of the mountain. Owner was very friendly and accommodating. Probably the nicest Passport America park in the desert West- too bad it's Fernley,NV. But it is quiet here, and the $17 daily deal for 3 nights is wonderful. Nice concrete sites with grass patches and small shade trees between, great cable TV, free WiFi although we used our Verizon Aircard. Quiet and dark at night.  Hosts here are friendly and care about guests. This is worth going out of the way or stopping awhile , or as a cheaper,quieter base for Reno. Would be nice to have a pool or fitness room or picnic tables, but we appreciated having a simple, clean and quiet place instead. Desert Rose RV Park
