Sunny’s Campground, Waseon OH

Stay Date:  Aug 2016
Our Rating:  Good – 8
Sunny's1The overnight section is a flat, grassy area with good separation between sites.  This huge park is mostly seasonals, but has a separate area of level grass full-hookup sites for transients. Sunny's2Just OK with the full rate, the park is a bargain at the Passport America rate. Our site was fairly level, hookups worked well, and the for-fee WiFi was adequate. Sunny's3No cable but a few OTA channels, and no obstructions to the satellites. Good Verizon cell/data. We were there on a weekday so it was quiet during our stay. Well worth the stop with the PA rate of $20/night.  Sunny’s Campground

Maywood Community, Chesterland OH

Stay Date:  July 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

Maywwod1Finding a decent place to stay in Northeastern Ohio is always a challenge.  Most parks are “seasonal” parks where people set up their trailers for the summer and visit on weekends.  These parks tend to have a few visitor sites, but are generally 30A and without sewer hookups.  Plus, they’re noisy on the weekends when the kids show up.  This time we hit the jackpot in finding this mobile home, over-55 community that has a half-dozenMaywood2 secluded RV spots with full hookups and 50A power.  Sites are all back-in on gravel/dirt, but have a concrete patio, and are shaded by large trees.  It’s a quiet area except for during weekdays when the noise from an adjacent landscaping company can be a little distracting.  No WiFi, but Verizon cell/data were strong.  Only a few sites and strategic positioning will result in a clear shot to the satellites, but there are ample OTA channels.  Maywood3The owner and his sister were welcoming and gracious, and were easy to deal with.  Convenient to I-271 which gives good access to the Cleveland area, and a short drive to the quaint village of Chardon.  This is a great place to stay, and for $21/night is an amazing bargain.  Maywood Community

Timberwoods Campground, Van Wert OH

Stay Date:  July 2016

Our Rating:  GOOD – 8

Timberlake1Most seasonal campgrounds in this part of the country are noisy and not too welcoming of overnighters.  This park was an exception.  Friendly check Timberlake2in and fellow RVers, and a separate area of pull-thru sites for transients.  Nicely shaded, but no cable or satellite view, and only a few OTA channels.  Timberlake3Good Verizon cell/data and acceptable WiFi.  Even on a Friday with a full park, it was quiet at night.  A bit off the main roads but worth the drive since good parks in this area are few.  We enjoyed our stay, although $38/night was high for the few amenities.  Timberwoods Campground

Heritage Hills Campground, Thompson OH

Stay Date:  August 2013
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
This is a largely seasonal park located well off the Interstate, but worth the trip if you're visiting the area. A large park. The landscaping is nicely maintained with large areas of grass. Two lakes provide fishing and swimming, and there's a nice store/office. The owners are very friendly and seemed intent on making our stay memorable. The transient sites are long pull-thrus with large grass areas and trees to give more privacy than average. Wi-Fi is a fee service, except for around the office area. No cable and little broadcast, but clear views of the satellites. Verizon cell and data were strong. Warning - If coming from I-90, the signs will take you down Ledge Road for over 2 miles of dirt/dust. Instead, stay on Rt 528 to the town square, then take Thompson Road to the south entrance to Ledge Road, a portion of the dirt road much shorter and less dusty.   $35/Night.  Heritage Hills Campground

Pier-Lon Campground, Medina OH

Stay Date:  Aug 2013
Our Rating:  Good – 8
Pier-Lon1There aren't many options in this area, and this is certainly one of the best locations.  Gated, well maintained and landscaped, and with a swimming lake and activities.  We spent a week, and throughout our stay, the park remained quiet and peaceful at night, perhaps because alcohol is prohibited.  Pier-Lon2A seasonal park, the transient section is an area of grass back-ins with some gravel scattered in a random pattern.  Sites share water hookups, so pressure is often very low.  No cable, but clear shot for satellite since the trees are few and small.  Verizon cell and data were strong, and the free WiFi worked well. Pier-Lon3 Another park that insists on using the plastic speed bumps that excessively rattle your RV no matter how slow you drive over them.  Overpriced for the services, but still the best park in the area.

This is a huge community of seasonal campers with a separate section for overnighters. Interior roads are gravel, and the pull-thru sites were grass. Good hookups and solid Wi-Fi, but no cable although most sites have a clear shot at the satellites. Verizon cell and data were good, despite being off the main roads. Although packed with seasonals, the park is well maintained, nicely landscaped, and well maintained. Lots of golf carts, but everyone seems to adhere to the speed limit of 10mph. A bit pricy for an overnight, but with facilities and activities that make it worthwhile for a longer stay.  $35/night.  Sunny’s Campground

Wright-Patterson AFB Famcamp, Dayton OH

Stay Date:  Multiple, last stay October 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD –7
This is a completely average RV park located on the back side of Wright-Patterson AFB.  WP Famcamp The road to the check in office is gravel, but after that all of the park roads and sites are paved.  Both pull-thru and back-in sites are available, and all are fairly large and have built in, often rickety tables and a grassy area.  No cable TV or WiFi, but all sites have a clear shot at the satellite and the Verizon cell and Aircard worked well.  A quiet area except for aircraft operations, but since they fly C-5s and they’re usually broke it isn’t too bad.  The Office lady is well meaning but seems confused.  Have patience as she tries to figure out where your reservation is.  Perhaps that accounts for the many sites with cones indicating they’re reserved being empty for weeks.  Be prepared for a long drive (5 miles) to an open gate after 6:00 at night and most weekends.  In spite of all this, it’s the best place in the area, and the price of $23/night is reasonable.  Military or DoD ID required.  Wright-Patterson Famcamp

Rocky Fork SP, Hillsboro OH

Stay Date:  October 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 9
One of Ohio’s best state parks; on a beautiful lake in the rolling hills, nice facilities, and large sites in a forest setting.  Paved roads and sites, many with full hookups, although not too level.  Some of the best sites cannot be reserved, but you can reserve a site and switch when you get there.  No cable or WiFi, and no service for Verizon cell and Aircard.  Ohio’s reservation web site will tell you if your have sun so that you can use your satellite.  There are tables, fire rings, hiking trails, a marina, and miniature golf.  A large marina holds lots of boats, and it is a busy, noisy place on summer weekends.  In the fall,  beware of parking under trees, the acorns, hickory nuts, and black walnuts will be thumping your roof.  Full hookups are $32/day, but stay Sunday through Thursday and you can use Passport America and pay $20.  Rocky Fork SP

Wolfie’s Campground, Zanesville OH

Stay Date:  September 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
We were pleasantly surprised by this campground.  After an intimidating drive down a winding road, we entered the campground, located on top of a hill.  A few long pull thru sites, others moderately long.  The long ones, which we occupied, are also satellite friendly while the others may not be (be sure to ask).  Fairly level gravel sites, with grass in between, free WiFi.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well.  Nice facilities, nothing fancy but everything clean and well-maintained, and the office folks were friendly.  Quiet and dark at night.  Zanesville is not a particularly scenic town, but the surrounding countryside is very pretty.  Reasonably priced at less than $30/night.  Wolfie’s Campground

Barcamp State Park, Belmont OH

Stay Date:  September 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD – 8
A surprising large and well maintained park.  After looking at the on-line site that only had sites listed to 35’ RVs, I called the office and the very friendly lady stated that there were plenty of sites that would accommodate our motorhome.   Interior roads and sites were all paved, but not very level.  Most sites back up to the woods, so satellite is not much of a problem.  30/50A only, no water or sewer, but with Passport America the $10 rate is a bargain.  There’s a lake for fishing, hiking trails, and programs during the summer.  Off the beaten path, it has a lot to offer for an overnight or an extended stay.  Barcamp State Park

Findley State Park, Wellington OH

Stay Date:  September 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD –8
A large state park set on a lake, well laid-out with nice facilities.  Paved interior roads and pads, but although the web site lists many for a 40’ motorhome, there are not many that are an adequate fit.  The site we chose resulted in the rear touching the trees, the nose just a foot off of the road.  The sites are large, with fire pit and table, and shaded in the rear, so we had a clear shot at the satellite.  30/50A electric only, $25/night (no discounts).  Nice lake with boat rentals, hiking trails, and organized programs during the summer.  Marginal Verizon and Aircard service.  Quiet and dark at night; a nice place to stay, but be aware of the short sites.  Findley State Park

Maple Lakes Campground, Seville OH

Stay Date:  August 2010
Our Rating:  GOOD –9
One of the best parks in the area, this large (300+ sites) mostly seasonal park has extremely well maintained and extensive facilities.  Located in wooded, rural farmland, entry is through a secure gate.  Interior roads and sites are gravel with a few pull thru sites, but mostly back-in.  Free WiFi was intermittent, no cable TV but ample shots at the satellite. Verizon cell and WiFi worked well.  Large sites with table, fire ring, and lots of grass.  Some have gravel patio areas.  Pets must be contained on your site; no walking dogs unless you drive them to the exercise area.  Perhaps a bit unreasonable, but it was nice to be in a park without dog droppings everywhere.  Generally very friendly residents and staff.  Nice pool, ball fields, laundry, and store.  Can be very busy and noisy on weekends, as pavilions and ball fields are rented out, and there’s no attempt to enforce the 11:00 quiet time.   Good access to I-71 & I-76  for Cleveland and Akron.  Reasonable for the area at $39/night, $480/month (includes electric).  Maples Lakes Campground

Streetsboro/Cleveland SE KOA, Streetsboro OH

Stay Date:  June 2009
Our Rating:  GOOD – 7
While the price was a bit high, this KOA is the only quality RV park in an area with few options. Most parks in this part of the country are 30 amp, no sewer, and crowded with seasonal campers. Interior roads and sites are gravel.  We opted for a back-in site for our 10 day stay, and it was fairly level, grass covered, and tree shaded (we had to use a portable satellite dish). The free WiFi was generally not usable, even though an antenna was close by. TV broadcast reception was spotty, and there is no cable TV. The Verizon cell and Aircard reception was excellent. There are many activities for families on the weekend, and plenty of areas for children, including a swimming "pond". The area has many restaurants and adequate shopping, and access to I-480 and Cleveland attractions is very good but at $37/night it’s overpriced.  Streetsboro KOA

Willow Lake Campground, Brunswick OH

Stay Date:  October 2006
Our Rating – REALLY UGLY - 1
If you’ve ever wondered what a FEMA disaster relief camp looks like, this is the place to visit, although I think a FEMA camp would be more organized.  Checked in by a cigarette-smoking woman with the smell of an ashtray, our first impression set the table for this horrid campground.  A small city of cheap trailers, with add-on rooms, blue tarps, inflatable palm trees and neon beer signs.  Sites were grass and rocks, 30A only, with no sewer.  The water smelled like sulfur, was undrinkable, and had the color of iced tea.  Clear shot to satellite, no cable or WiFi, but you’re close enough to Cleveland to receive broadcast TV.  Verizon cell and Aircard worked well.  On leaving, there was no need for directions to the dump station, you could smell it everywhere in the campground.  Made me wish I had a HAZMAT suit.  It doesn’t matter what they charge per night, they couldn’t pay US to return.
