Price reflects the Escapee discount. A nice park, with very friendly owners, just outside dismal Del Rio. Interior roads are paved with gravel pads and small trees. Hookups are in the back of the long pull through sites, so extra hoses may be needed. Free cable TV worked well, but WiFi was weak and barely usable from our site. Verizon cell service was marginal as was the Aircard. Significant road noise at night from the adjacent highway. Nice facilities and an inexpensive breakfast twice a week, but the price was a bit high for an overnight stay, $31 with Escapees 15% discount. Broke Mill RV Park

Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area, San Angelo TX
Stay Date: November 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
This is a well-maintained, full-service campground and RV park on Lake Nasworthy, about 10 miles from Goodfellow AFB. Interior roads are gravel, but there are concrete pads on loops that provide easy entry/departure. Sites are large, with table and most have shade. Nearby is a marina with boat rental and swimming beach. Quiet this time of year, but can be noisy during the day in the summer months. Sporadic office hours, but an on-site host will check you in. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. There's not much in the area, and this is a hidden jewel of a park, at an exceptional price. Military or DoD ID Required. Goodfellow AFB Recreation Area

Shady Oaks RV Park, Brownwood TX
Stay Date: November 2010
Our Rating: BAD – 5
Just a gravel parking lot along side the highway, this park offers nothing more than a place to overnight. Some large trees offer a bit of shade, but sites have no grass, tables, and are only identified by the hookups. Almost exclusively long term residents; we were the only transient RV during our stay. Free cable TV and good Wi-Fi, and Verizon cell was marginal and there was no Aircard service. The manager was very friendly, and the park is convenient to shopping and dining in Brownwood. This is the only park in town, and next time we'll adjust our schedule to avoid overnighting in the area. Brownwood RV Park

Our Rating: GOOD – 9
This is one of Texas' best state parks - large sites with picnic pavilions and fire rings, full hookups with cable TV, and a great scenic drive. Paved interior roads and sites, but sites are not always level. No Verizon cell phone but strangely, Aicard worked (but slowly); and the Indian lodge (which has a fair restaurant) has free WiFi. Most sites have a clear shot to the satellite. This is a great destination park and also a good place from which to visit McDonald Observatory, Fort Davis National Historic Site, and the "Marfa Mystery Lights". Fort Davis has a fair variety of restaurants, one grocery store, and two gas stations; all are pricey so stock up before arrival. This is the part of Texas we saw in the old Westerns – mountain vistas, rocky canyons, miles of sage brush, and you’ll see deer and Javelina while you’re there. A great place to stay, full hookup sites are a steal at $20/night. Davis Mountains State Park

What a find! A pretty park with nice sites, good hookups, and and a new, free laundry for the Passport America rate of $12.50/night. Gravel interior roads and pads, terraced slightly but level, with grass, newly-planted trees, and a table. Long pull-thrus are in the middle and have a clear view of the sky for the satellite, large back-in sites have trees and shade. No cable TV, but good free WiFi. Nice little laundry with two each washer/dryers are free. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Very quiet and peaceful, no road noise. Not a family destination park, but a great place to spend a few days. The owner and host are friendly and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. Cash or checks only. Big Cypress RV Park

Sunrise RV Park, Texarkana AR
Stay Date: November 2010
Our Rating: BAD – 5
Located on the frontage road of I-30, this is basically a big gravel parking lot with hookups. Long, staggered pull thru sites without trees, grass, tables, or view. Very noisy at night; besides the freeway noise, the park is at an exit with a Flying J, and the decelerating trucks will rattle the windows. Lots of long term residents who leave early in the morning, and the loud crunching of tires on gravel is noticeable. Good free cable TV and WiFi, and Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Friendly managers and an escort to the site was nice. A safe place to stay off the road, but not exactly a serene place to spend the night. At $32/night with discounts it’s a place we’ll pass by next trip.

We had mixed feelings about this campground; it was fairly easy to access, on a nice base with good facilities, and inexpensive ($12). On the other hand, it had enough against it that we don’t consider it a place to return to. The 10 full-hookup sites with 50A were all taken (they don’t take reservations), and at least 5 of them were long-term residents. The remaining sites were pull thrus, 30A and water only, and had concrete pads. The pads were wide but not long enough to leave your tow attached, although the guy behind us did and semi-blocked the road. The patio area was deep pea gravel, which made walking in it a chore, but there was a nice table. Our view was of a ramshackle trailer, complete with tarp cover, chain-link kennels, and lots of junk plus at least two cars. No cable TV or WiFi, but our Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Imagine our joy when at 7:00 AM on Monday morning we were treated to reveille played loud enough to rattle the windows. We’ll pass on this location in the future. Military or DoD ID required. Our Rating: GOOD – 8
Not a resort, but a good, comfortable, and quiet place to stay. Friendly check-in, with a reminder to get our players’ cards from the casino to qualify for the $16/night rate. Paved interior roads with long, concrete pull-thru sites, each with a picnic table, grill, grass, and convenient hookups. Minimal cable TV, but clear shot to satellites. No WiFi, but Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Some light at night from adjacent casinos, but not bad. Fenced, with security patrols, but we didn’t see a shuttle and it’s a 1/2 mile walk to the casino. Shop the casinos for bargains – we ate every night for free with a minimum of gaming. A good place to stay if you’re here to explore the casinos. Sam’s Town Casino RV Park

Marginally good. Easy access from I-40 via a four-lane highway, and although it's a steep climb into the park, it's paved and not a problem. We had an escort to the site, a long (70') pull-through. Interior roads and sites are gravel, and our site was not very level. There’s a nice lake with free catch and release fishing. No trees, a crumbling table, and a fire ring at each site. Free cable TV and good free WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Our coach was lit at night by a large, bright security light adjacent to the pull-through sites. The hosts state that the new owners are putting a great deal of work into the park; it's an old KOA and it needs it. Not a bad stay, but not a memorable one, either, especially for $28/night. . Singing Hills RV Park & Campground, Cave City KY
Stay Date: October 2010
Our Rating: GOOD –7
We gave this pretty average campground an extra point for the friendliness of the owners and the great Passport America rate ($16/night for 50A). Getting into the campground requires a difficult right turn so be careful of the mailbox and fence. Interior roads and sites are gravel, mostly on rolling hills and not too level. Free secure WiFi was strong, and there’s no cable TV and some trees. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. The 50A plug was close to the ground which took some heavy bending of the surge protector, and a power pole guy wire and bush required some careful maneuvering to make sure the slides were clear when extended. But, for the low rate and partly because of the owner’s concern for your comfort (they give you a card with their cell number and instructions to call them if you need any help – in or out of the park), we enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. Our Rating: GOOD –7
This is a completely average RV park located on the back side of Wright-Patterson AFB. The road to the check in office is gravel, but after that all of the park roads and sites are paved. Both pull-thru and back-in sites are available, and all are fairly large and have built in, often rickety tables and a grassy area. No cable TV or WiFi, but all sites have a clear shot at the satellite and the Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. A quiet area except for aircraft operations, but since they fly C-5s and they’re usually broke it isn’t too bad. The Office lady is well meaning but seems confused. Have patience as she tries to figure out where your reservation is. Perhaps that accounts for the many sites with cones indicating they’re reserved being empty for weeks. Be prepared for a long drive (5 miles) to an open gate after 6:00 at night and most weekends. In spite of all this, it’s the best place in the area, and the price of $23/night is reasonable. Military or DoD ID required. Wright-Patterson Famcamp

One of Ohio’s best state parks; on a beautiful lake in the rolling hills, nice facilities, and large sites in a forest setting. Paved roads and sites, many with full hookups, although not too level. Some of the best sites cannot be reserved, but you can reserve a site and switch when you get there. No cable or WiFi, and no service for Verizon cell and Aircard. Ohio’s reservation web site will tell you if your have sun so that you can use your satellite. There are tables, fire rings, hiking trails, a marina, and miniature golf. A large marina holds lots of boats, and it is a busy, noisy place on summer weekends. In the fall, beware of parking under trees, the acorns, hickory nuts, and black walnuts will be thumping your roof. Full hookups are $32/day, but stay Sunday through Thursday and you can use Passport America and pay $20. Rocky Fork SP

Our Rating: GOOD – 8
We were pleasantly surprised by this campground. After an intimidating drive down a winding road, we entered the campground, located on top of a hill. A few long pull thru sites, others moderately long. The long ones, which we occupied, are also satellite friendly while the others may not be (be sure to ask). Fairly level gravel sites, with grass in between, free WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Nice facilities, nothing fancy but everything clean and well-maintained, and the office folks were friendly. Quiet and dark at night. Zanesville is not a particularly scenic town, but the surrounding countryside is very pretty. Reasonably priced at less than $30/night. Wolfie’s Campground

A surprising large and well maintained park. After looking at the on-line site that only had sites listed to 35’ RVs, I called the office and the very friendly lady stated that there were plenty of sites that would accommodate our motorhome. Interior roads and sites were all paved, but not very level. Most sites back up to the woods, so satellite is not much of a problem. 30/50A only, no water or sewer, but with Passport America the $10 rate is a bargain. There’s a lake for fishing, hiking trails, and programs during the summer. Off the beaten path, it has a lot to offer for an overnight or an extended stay. Barcamp State Park

Sara’s Campground, Erie PA
Stay Date: Sept 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
This is difficult campground to rate; ours is based on the time of year, which probably is very important at a place like this. Almost a calamity – the GPS, using the campground address, told us the campground was on the left, and it was – but only the office and gate for the permanent residents. Had we turned left, we would have had to unhook the tow and spend an hour trying to turn around. Fortunately, we saw the small sign on the right, and pulled in to meet a relieved host on a golf cart. He escorted us to a site and told us to register after hooking up. We ended up on a concrete pad with multiple-user power boxes. There were four plugs; one 50A, the rest 30A. The 50A was already in use, so we settled for the 30. There was good free cable TV, thankfully because the park is completely tree-covered. No WiFi, but Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. The park is a helter-skelter arrangement of seasonal and transient RVs, complete with add-on rooms, outside furniture, etc. It was quiet and reasonably dark at night, and for the Passport America rate of $20/night, it wasn’t a bad stay. No reservations taken, so during the summer you’ll have trouble getting a large site. Sara’s Campground

Stay Date: September 2010
Our Rating: GOOD –8
A large state park set on a lake, well laid-out with nice facilities. Paved interior roads and pads, but although the web site lists many for a 40’ motorhome, there are not many that are an adequate fit. The site we chose resulted in the rear touching the trees, the nose just a foot off of the road. The sites are large, with fire pit and table, and shaded in the rear, so we had a clear shot at the satellite. 30/50A electric only, $25/night (no discounts). Nice lake with boat rentals, hiking trails, and organized programs during the summer. Marginal Verizon and Aircard service. Quiet and dark at night; a nice place to stay, but be aware of the short sites. Findley State Park

Stay Date: August 2010

One of the best parks in the area, this large (300+ sites) mostly seasonal park has extremely well maintained and extensive facilities. Located in wooded, rural farmland, entry is through a secure gate. Interior roads and sites are gravel with a few pull thru sites, but mostly back-in. Free WiFi was intermittent, no cable TV but ample shots at the satellite. Verizon cell and WiFi worked well. Large sites with table, fire ring, and lots of grass. Some have gravel patio areas. Pets must be contained on your site; no walking dogs unless you drive them to the exercise area. Perhaps a bit unreasonable, but it was nice to be in a park without dog droppings everywhere. Generally very friendly residents and staff. Nice pool, ball fields, laundry, and store. Can be very busy and noisy on weekends, as pavilions and ball fields are rented out, and there’s no attempt to enforce the 11:00 quiet time. Good access to I-71 & I-76 for Cleveland and Akron. Reasonable for the area at $39/night, $480/month (includes electric). Maples Lakes Campground

Not really an overnight stopping place, but a large, commercial-feeling waterpark and campground. It’s an easy three miles off the interstate, and if you're lucky (like we were), you’ll get a spot away from the water park area. Dirt interior roads and pull thru sites, lots of tall pines shielding the sky, but ask at the office, there are some sites with access to the satellite. No cable TV, WiFi for a fee. Sites were level and good sized. We were lucky to have a rainshower which drove everyone inside, otherwise we faced a noisy night of parties. For $39 it’s a nice place but too expensive for an overnight. Eby’s Pines RV park and Campground

This is a gem of a campground; level gravel sites under mature trees, large sites, and lots of grass. Very friendly owners. No cable TV, so ask for a site with a view of the sky. Free WiFi worked OK, and Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Make sure you follow the blue signs to the campground, if you follow your GPS, you’ll end up with a 10’ overhead railroad overpass. Also, the road to the campground is on the first road past the bridge; our GPS had us turning prior to the bridge. This is the kind of place you wish was at every stop – quiet, friendly, and reasonable at $28/night. Geneseo Campground

Our Rating: REALLY UGLY – 2
Yikes, what a dump! Located behind a truck stop, you check in at the motel office, then drive through the tractor-trailer ruts to an open field with drive thru sites so narrow that our motorhome wheels hung over into the grass. Our first attempt at a site resulted in it not having power, our second attempt, in another rutted, uneven site, finally worked. No trees, not amenities, and the restrooms from the outside looked like Forest Service pit toilets. No Cable TV, no WiFi, but Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Noisy at night with trucks entering and leaving the truck stop, with lots of bright lights to add insult to injury. At $32/night, this dump is a rip off and we wouldn’t have stayed but there was no option in the area. Would have been a “0” rating but the hookups worked well.

Holiday RV Park, North Platte, NE
Stay Date: June 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
Convenient to I-80, this popular stopping place offers a good overnight stay, albeit at premium price ($35/night). Dirt roads and level sites, lots of trees and bushes. Tough to see the sky for the satellite, but free cable TV and WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Flying J just down the road, some road noise but not too bad. Another pricey park, but not much else in the area. Holiday RV Park

Western Hills RV Park, Rawlins WY
Stay Date: June 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
A good overnight stay in an area with few options. Basically a large gravel parking lot with hookups, the sites are not very large but level. No trees to get in the way of the satellite, and free cable TV and adequate WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Easy access to I-80 although not much traffic noise at night, but some train noise. Easy walking distance to an adequate and forgettable restaurant. Cool at night with an elevation of 7000’. Pretty much a ho-hum overnight stop with a reasonable price of $27/night. Western Hills RV Park

Stay date: June 2010
Our Rating – Good – 10
Too bad more communities don’t have parks like this. A few miles off of the interstate, but well worth the drive. Well laid out level pull-thru sites, with nicely maintained grass, table, and even flowers. Small trees for shade, so easy shot at the satellite. No cable or WiFi, but Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. On the banks of the Snake River, with paved hiking trails through the riparian area. Lots of birds, quiet and dark at night – a great place to spend the night or a few days. All for a price of $23, a bargain. Heyburn Riverside RV Park

Stay Date: June 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
A good overnight stay if you’re visiting the casino, with paved roads and level paved sites, some grass, and a few small trees. Sewer hookup placement is far back; with tow vehicle pulled up to clear the road, it may be difficult to reach without extensions. Clear sky for satellite, no cable TV but free adequate WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Quiet and dark at night, and there’s a free shuttle to take you to the casino, where the buffet was above average. A little high for a casino, but the $27/night charge was worth it for the overnight. Wildhorse Casino RV Park

Portland-Woodburn RV Park, Woodburn OR
Stay Date; Numerous, last stay June 2010
Our Rating: GOOD –7
We like this park, not only because of it’s amenities, but because it borders a huge outlet mall, and since Oregon has no sales tax, this is a good place to stop and stock up on clothes. The park itself is nothing remarkable, but has paved roads and sites, nice grass and small trees between the sites, and is relatively quiet although close to the interstate. There are a number of permanent residents, but visitors are generally parked in the front row where it’s easy to get in and out. Free WiFi and Cable, nice pool, and free coffee at the nicely furnished store/office; $39/night but worth it if you visit the outlet center. The park has it’s own locked gate to the shopping area, and it’s a quick walk across from the park to a couple of good restaurants and a Starbucks. This is a busy section of I-5, so be prepared for three lanes in each direction of heavy traffic. Portland-Woodburn RV Park

Bullards Beach State Park, Bandon OR
Stay Date June 2010
Our Rating: GOOD –9
One of Oregon’s best coastal parks – large, paved back-in sites, lots of trees, and great facilities. Paved paths to beach, neat lighthouse, and trails through woods. No cable TV or WiFI, and on A & B loop you’ll probably need a portable dish to find a hole to see the satellite. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. 50A full hookup sites are on C loop, with many open sites for your satellite. Evening programs and activities during the summer. A beautiful park, a bargain at $24/night. Bullards Beach State Park

Double Dice RV Park, Elko NV
Stay Date: April 2010
Our Rating: BAD - 6
A fairly forgettable park, just a gravel parking lot with hookups. Pull-thru spaces are ill defined from front to back, some vehicles end up sticking out into the access roads. Sites are very close together, if there isn’t an empty spot next to you, you’ll get to know your neighbors really well. Free good cable TV, WiFi advertised but didn’t work. Free continental breakfast in office. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Fairly noisy, and if you’re near the office the bright lights will illuminate your interior. OK for an overnight if you’re in a pinch, but the $35/night (with Good Sam Discount) makes this place to expensive for what you get. Double Dice RV Park

Stay Date: April 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 10
We’ve never stayed at a better park – think Disneyland for RVers. A true resort, with beautiful welcome center, meticulously landscaped grounds, and perfectly-maintained facilities. Paved interior roads and long pull-thru sites, modular hookups, nice grass and shrubbery, and a concrete patio with nice table and chairs. Easy shot to satellite, with free cable and good WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Easy access to I-5 but quiet at night. Free shuttle to the beautiful 7 Feathers Casino. Everything you could want for a quality stay, and for about $30 (depending on Player Card discount and comps), it’s a great value. Seven Feathers RV Resort

A good place to stay whether traveling or while visiting the casino. Self check-in kiosk, gravel road and pull-thru sites, mostly level with good hookups. No trees to block the sky, no cable TV, spotty WiFi. Good Verizon cell and Aircard service. Convenient to I-5, but in back of the casino so little traffic noise. Free shuttle to the casino. Nothing special, but a good, safe, and quiet place to stay, for a great price of $25. Rolling Hills Casino RV Park

A true resort; park under the portico for check-in, follow your escort to your beautifully landscaped and long pull-thru site, and enjoy the patio and artificial grass. Perfectly level, with modular hookups, free cable TV and good WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. A bit of a drive through a residential community, but easy to find and worth it for the quiet. Not cheap at $39/night, but if you want to treat yourself, stop here. Sparks Marina RV Resort

Fort Bridger RV Camp, Fort Bridger WY
Stay Date: April 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
There’s not a lot of choices on this part of I-80, but Fort Bridger turned out to be a nice place to spend the night. We called ahead, and even though they were not officially open, the friendly lady manager told us to c’mon in, and she’d turn on the water for us. The park is a large grassy area, with dirt roads and long pull-thru sites. Not many trees so there’s a clear shot to the satellite. Because of the time of year, it was a bit muddy and stark, but it looks like it would be a pretty place in the summer. No cable TV, and free WiFi was spotty; Verizon cell service was marginal and the Aircard unusable. The park sits behind historic Fort Bridger, and was quiet during our visit. Beware stepping tin the moose droppings! All this for $25/night. Fort Bridger RV Camp

Casper KOA, Casper WY
Stay Date: April 2010
Our Rating: BAD –6
KOAs tend to be overpriced for an overnight stay, and this one was no exception. Nice office, friendly staff, but otherwise just a gravel parking lot with hookups. It did have a patio and table, but the table was run down and there was trash everywhere. Free cable TV and WiFi worked well, and Verizon Cell and Aircard were strong. Located a few miles North of Casper on the Interstate, so there was some traffic noise. Surrounded by a less than stellar neighborhood, but it was quiet and dark at night. At $44/night, we’ll plan on avoiding this park in the future. Casper KOA

Rush No More RV Park and Campground, Sturgis SD
Stay Date: April 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
There was still some snow on the ground when we were here, so we were one of only a few RVs, but it was still an enjoyable stay. Friendly hosts checked us in, and we picked one of many gravel pull-thru sites. Sites are not very level and are barely adequate in size. The park sits off the Interstate in a beautiful valley and was quiet during our stay, but is probably crowded and noisy and during the summer. Not many trees at sites, so we had a clear shot at the satellite. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, and the park free WiFi was strong. The location, between Sturgis and Rapid City, is convenient to Deadwood, the Black Hills, and Mount Rushmore. At $37.50/night, it’s what you would expect from a park in this area. Rush No More RV Park

Famil-E-Fun Campground, Mitchell SD
Stay Date: April 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
Sometimes a campground stay is made better by the friendliness of the owners, and this was one of those. Although struggling to open after a horrible winter, the owners went out of their way to make sure the water worked, our site was clear, and that we had a good overnight stay. Bare trees and brown grass with snow in the shade detracted from the appearance, but this looks like a pretty, tree-shaded park in the summer. Verizon Aircard and cell service were good and the park has free WiFi. Dark at night with only a minimum of noise from the interstate. For $25/night, this park is a bargain. Convenient to I-29 on a scary, narrow dirt road, then down a hill to the parking area. The new owner is making visible improvements, and our site was level gravel with good hookups. Verizon Aircard and cell service were very good. No cable, and a fair amount of trees, but our site had a clear shot at the satellite. Free WiFi worked well. Quiet and dark except for freeway noise, this was a good overnight and probably a nice destination park in the summer. The reasonable very price of $20/night made this a worthwhile stay. Our Rating: GOOD – 7
The Passport America rate of $12.50/night helped elevate the rating of this park. While not a destination park, it serves the purpose of a good overnight stop. Big, level pull-thrus, 50A power, and quiet at night. On a dusty 1/4 mile road; watch for the park on the left. Verizon Aircard and phone service was very good. No cable or WiFi, but clear shot to satellite. Very informal check-in; if no one is around, drop the money in a slot. Owner is very friendly and the Passport America rate is a bargain. Camp Huaco Springs, New Braunfels, TX
Stay Date: Multiple, Last March 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
This has become our winter home for a three or four month stay. The low monthly rate ($295) includes full hookups (50A) – a real bargain. The sites are very large, and the area is quiet during the winter months. Hookups are unique; each site is three lanes wide with hookups at each side. This allowed us to pull in nose-first with a great view overlooking the cypress-lined Guadalupe River. Sites have a large cement patio, picnic table, and barbecue on a stand. The area is generally quiet except for motorcycles on the adjacent River Road, and was only a bit crowded once the state began stocking trout every Friday in December. The staff was very friendly, there is a small store, and WiFi (weak & spotty) is free. Verizon cell and Air Card worked very well, and there’s a clear shot to the satellite. Just a short 3 miles from Nw Braunfels which has all amenities, and less than an hour from downtown San Antonio and the fabulous RiverWalk. No pets, glass, or Styrofoam allowed along the river, but during the winter small pets are allowed in the RV area. This is a huge "toobing" area during the summer and is crowded and noisy.
