While as full timers we don't normally stay at KOAs, this park has become an exception; its large sites, tree-covered location next to a river, quiet setting, and security gate make it a great overnight stay. Level gravel pull thru sites. Good free Wi-Fi (for a change) and OK cable. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, and there’s a clear shot at the satellite. Friendly owners, and the campground ducks also were a plus. Not cheap, like all KOAs, at $44/night. Junction KOA
After nine years of living on the road, we've decided to share our opinion on the many parks and resorts we've stayed at - hopefully to help you decide where to stay and avoid our mistakes!

Saddleback Mountain RV Park, Balmorhea TX
Stay Date: December 2009
Our Rating: GOOD –7
There’s not much around this park, it’s purely an overnight stop only. But for the $10/night Passport America rate, it’s a bargain. Long pull-thru sites, 50A power, water, sewer, and even a bit of landscaping. The truck stop check-in is a dump, but the park area is far enough away that the noise isn’t too bad. No cable TV, WiFi, or any amenities, just a level dirt site. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, and in this part of Texas there aren’t any trees that would block a rooftop satellite. We were glad to get off the road since it snowed, a rarity in this area. Don’t believe the web site – this is an overnight stop only. Saddleback Mountain RV Park

Sunny Acres RV Park, Las Cruces NM
Stay Date: December 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
This is a good place to stay In Las Cruces; easy access from I-10, nice facilities, and for us a good alternative to the increasingly expensive Hacienda RV Resort. Friendly staff, both pull-thru and back-in spaces, all large and level gravel (the back-in sites are larger and have shade). Lots of big trees, but the park has free cable TV and WiFi. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Nice clubhouse and facilities, and convenient to shopping and Old Mesilla. A great stop at the standard rate of $31.50/night, but they accept Passport America during the summer. Sunny Acres RV Park

San Onofre Recreation Beach, Camp Pendleton, CA
Stay Date: Multiple, last stay November 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
Staying anywhere in the Los Angeles area is expensive, but fortunately the Marine base has an outstanding facility right on the beach near San Clemente. Easy access from “The Five”, good paved roads, some paved, mostly dirt/sand sites. The full-hookup sites are across the road from the beach, and the noise can be a distraction, especially on a weekend when the young Marines come to party. Sites are fairly level, no cable or WiFi, but Verizon Aircard worked well. Some train noise, but not too much at night. Incredible beach and surf, and if you’re willing to settle for water/electric only, you can park nose-in right on the beach, surrounded by privacy shrubs, with a firepit and the sound of surf to put you to sleep. A busy place, but well run and at $35/day full hookup site, a bargain in this area. Military or DoD ID required. San Onofre Recreation Beach

This is a long-term snowbird park, not an overnight stop. For $28 (cash only) you get a spot in a gravel parking lot on the periphery of the park with water and electric only - no sewer hookup, table, trees; just dust and train noise. Unfriendly people looked at us as if we were intruders to their remote little world. Our bad, we should have done more research; don't make our mistake - avoid this park if traveling, there are better, less expensive parks around. We'll avoid this park in the future.

Park of the Sierras, Coarsegold CA
Stay Date: November 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
This park is limited to Escapees members and their guests; you rent the site of an absent owner for the $15 plus metered electric. An absolutely gorgeous park with great facilities. The park roads are paved and wind through the oaks and manzanilla. Sites are large and depending on how much the owner has added, very nice with patios, bird feeders, and other touches. The staff and residents are friendly and helpful, and you're invited to all of the activities. Good Verizon cell and Air Card, and most sites have free cable. There’s a good casino down the road. It's almost worth the annual cost of membership just to come here. It's a special place and we'll stay here again. Park of the Sierras

This is a hidden gem - your $25 gets you a large, level cement pad, great hookups, cable TV, excellent Wi-Fi, and a shady, quiet location. Mostly permanent residents and nicely landscaped. No restroom facilities. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Don't let the drive through the used car lot fool you; this is a quality park. Some train noise at night but not bad. Green Acres RV Park

Regency Inn and RV, Ashland OR
Stay Date: November 2010
Our Rating: REALLY UGLY – 3
We pulled in to this location due to bad weather and a review that didn't sound too bad; however, just the appearance of the motel should have been a clue that this was not going to be a quality experience. For $29 you get a tight pull through between antique 30 amp power pedestals, with your tow in a grass/dirt lot and most of the coach hanging into the parking lot. Only the cable TV kept the rating lower. Seedy looking permanent units, noise from the highway, and big rigs using the space behind all night contributed to a restless night. An OK $12 stop, but for $29 it's a ripoff. We'll drive through the area in a blizzard next time rather than stop here.

Harris Beach SP, Brookings OR
Stay Date: November 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
Oregon has one of the best park systems in the country, and Harris beach is a great example of how a state park should operate. We reserved a site ($8 Reserve America fee) since much of the park is closed down during the winter, but were able to trade on arrival for a larger first-come site with high on the bluff with an ocean view. We had an incredible view of the water and sea stacks, and fell asleep at night to the sound of the pounding waves. A large volunteer force keeps the place looking like Disneyland, and all of the facilities are immaculate. One of the few parks with WiFi (pay) and excellent cable TV (included in site fee). Verizon Cell and air card signal were very strong. Difficult to find a hole in the trees for a satellite shot. Although the best sites with views are 30A and without sewer, this is a real bargain at the winter rate. Harris Beach SP

Winchester Bay RV Resort, OR
Stay date: Multiple, most recent October 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 10
Ah, if only all RV “resorts” lived up to this place. Built on a jetty, paved and landscapes sites all have a beautiful view of the harbor or river, and you can year the waves crashing in the distance. If you’re lucky, you can score a pull-in site right on the harbor and watch the Harbor Seals, Dolphin, and ducks. Great lighted hookups include cable, and there’s free WiFi. You can fish and crab from right in front of your RV, or out on the jetty. The harbor area is crammed with interesting restaurants and shops, or you can just walk the dock area and enjoy the atmosphere. Up on the hill is an interesting Coast Guard museum and lighthouse, and you can walk the beach and see an oyster farm. Nearby Reedsport has groceries and things to do; don’t miss the elk along Highway 38! $39/night during the summer, but the winter rates are reasonable ($29) and it’s generally mild along the coast. Devil’s Lake RV Park, Lincoln OR
Stay Date: October 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
An easy to find, nicely located park just off Highway 101 on the North side of Lincoln City. All paved roads and sites, terraced on a hill overlooking the lake. While our site was a long end of row pull-through (60') with lots of room, it was not level and required a good deal of raising/blocking on one side. Great cable TV, and the free WiFi generally worked well. Clear view of sky for the satellite. Good Verizon cell and air card service. No permanent residents that we could see, only host sites and travelers. Nicely landscaped, clean, and quiet and dark at night. Hookups were all very good; it's nice to be in an area where the water quality is very good. Devil’s Lake RV Park

Lewis & Clark Golf & RV Resort, Astoria OR
Stay Date: October 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
We spent a week at this great little park with it's pull-in sites on the golf course. Convenient to Astoria and other Columbia River attractions, the large, level gravel sites and manicured green grass provided plenty of room in this quiet location. Free WiFi is provided and works fairly well; Verizon cell and Air Card service were very good. Clear shot to satellite. No facilities other than a great site and view which is fine with us; but not a family campground. The friendly folks that checked us in provided us with an armload of maps and guidebooks. A bit pricy at around $40/night, but a quality stay. Lewis & Clark Golf & RV Resort

American Sunset RV and Tent Resort, Westport WA
Stay Date: October 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
This is one of those parks that you hope to find at each destination; well run, well designed, and reasonable in price. It's located close to the marina (not quite close enough to walk), the sites are all back-in, but if not crowded, pulling through from the site in back is allowed. Sites are level gravel, adequately sized, with a table and fire ring. Free limited (22-channel) cable TV is provided. The park was quiet and dark at night, and road noise is minimal. Verizon cell and Aircard were marginal but worked, and the free park WiFi was not working except for one day of our 9-day stay. Lots of workcampers keep things running smoothly, and the owner is friendly and helpful. A great place to stay in an interesting small coastal town. Summer rate of $29/night with Good Sam or AARP makes this an affordable stay. American Sunset RV and Tent Resort

Elwha Dam RV Park, Port Angeles WA
State Date: September 2010
Our Rating: BAD – 6
We spent a disappointing week here. This is one of those parks that will be highly rated by smaller units, and for those of us with large motorhomes, be appropriately poorly rated. On one hand, it is nicely landscaped, with flowers, bird feeders, and ponds, and the staff is very friendly. On the other, the sites are too small for motorhomes with slides, not all are 50A, and the 30A voltage is marginal. It's not possible to get into and out of many sites with a tow attached since backing up will be necessary to get in between the trees and into the terraced sites. The park is heavily treed making satellite reception spotty, and there is no cable TV and little broadcast. There are many permanent residents, and while their sites are neat and segregated from the travelers, they drive through the traveler's area each morning, starting at 5:00 AM. If you have a small unit and only require 30A power, this may suit you fine; for us, we'll pass if in the area again. Curiously, it is less expensive to stay day by day than the weekly rate.

Fairchild AFB, Spokane WA
Stay Date: Numerous – Last Stay September 2009
Our Rating: Good – 8
A nice place to stay. Nothing fancy, just good level sites, solid hookups, and a small patch of grass, some even have shade. Hosts here have always been friendly, and $17 daily/$100 Weekly cost is well worth it. Nice commissary and BX, and not a very active/noisy place. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, and there’s broadcast TV and free WiFi. The only drawback is that the base is in an industrial area without much in the area, and Spokane is a 30-minute drive. Military or DoD ID required. Fairchild AFB Famcamp

Fort Lewis Travel Camp
Stay Date: September 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
We enjoyed our two-week stay at this beautiful travel camp. A word of caution; DO NOT use the North Fort Lewis exit if you don't have a valid DoD sticker on your vehicles - you'll be turned around at the gate. The visitor center is on the other side of the exit, on the Fort Lewis exit. Signage is good except for the turn-in to the park, just look for the first left turn after the Travel Camp sign. Check in was fast and easy, but don't expect much if you get the bored-looking young man who talks in monosyllables. Sites are a mixed bag of 30 and 50A, we had a large site, but it had 30A (but worked well). Most of the back-ins are sloped, so bring blocks for leveling. The sites are generally well shielded from one another, and have tables and grills. The MWR building where check-in is located also has a good-sized store with RV supplies and equipment rentals. The sites are quiet and dark at night, and Verizon cell and Aircard worked very well. Cable TV is provided; however, because of the cable company's requirement to have a digital box, you'll only get 20 or so channels. A good place to stay, albeit a bit pricey for military location, with excellent on-post support facilities. Military or DoD ID required. Fort Lewis Travel Camp

Sun Country Golf Resort & RV Park, Cle Elum WA
Stay Date: September 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
This is an interesting setting; outside of town, down a narrow, twisting 8% or more grade, to sites surrounding the golf course parking lot. Sites 1 through 3 are long (we were in site 1) but highly sloped and even with a multitude of blocks, it was impossible to level the coach. Sites are adequate in space with green grass; hookups are spaced between each site so odd sites will need a long water hose. Verizon Aircard and cell phone signals were strong. Free cable TV is provided and there is ample clearance for a satellite dish. It was quiet at night, but during the day there was a fair amount of traffic, and on the weekends quite a bit. We were treated to drunken karaoke singing at blasting volume after a weekend tournament, but fortunately they tired out shortly after 9:00 PM. Be careful on the entrance road; golf carts and construction vehicles make the trip a bit sporty. It's a beautiful setting but next time we'll probably try another park if in the area. This is an amazing park: certainly one of the top ten we've ever visited. We parked on beautiful putting-green quality grass, under huge pines, surrounded by landscaped dividers. Quiet, dark at night, only the sound of an occasional distant train to break the silence. Marginal Verizon cell phone and no Aircard reception, but the park's WiFi worked well. No pool, mini-golf, or frills, just beauty in a place surrounded by mountains. Beautiful lake and mountains nearby. The Passport America rate of $14/night makes this the best bargain we've ever found. Trout Creek Motel, Cabins, and RV Park

This is an exceptional KOA in that you get your money's worth. Large sites with trees and grass, convenient to shopping, extensive facilities, including an on-site breakfast cafe make this a worthwhile stay. Although close to the main highway, it's quiet and dark at night (once the kids get tucked in) and the landscaping maintenance is noteworthy. Paved roads and level gravel sites. The free WiFi worked well, and the cable TV was very good. Lot of trees so not always a clear shot to the satellite. You can't do better in the Missoula area. Missoula KOA

This is a nice little campground in the tall pines at the South end of the Bitterroot Valley. Nothing fancy, only one 50A site but otherwise full (30A) hookups, right next to the East Fork of the Bitterroot River. No Verizon cell or Aircard service, and no TV or cable. Finding a hole in the trees for a satellite is also a challenge. There is a nice little store with an excellent cafe for breakfast or lunch Wed-Sun. There’s a pond with huge trout where the kids can fish. This is a great spot for a nice quiet evening with the smell of wood smoke and pines. A relaxing stay for $25/night. This is the kind of park we wish we could find in every town; friendly check-in, good sized sites with real grass, and level, gravel sites with an area for the awning and picnic table. The free WiFi worked well, and Verizon cell and Aircard coverage was good. No cable TV, but only small trees so good shot at the Satellite. Hookups were good, especially the water which had good pressure and was very soft. Quiet and dark at night, there was little road noise. It is convenient to Ennis, Virginia City, and the Madison River trout fishing access areas. A great stay in a beautiful area for $33/night. Ennis RV Village

Finally, a KOA that is reasonably priced and delivers on its promises. Friendly owner, golf cart escort, and large, level gravel sites. Good hookups, shade, some grass, and free WiFi that worked. Small but adequate pool and playground. Verizon Cell and Aircard worked well; free cable TV, and satellite TV may be a problem due to the large cottonwoods. Not much in Hardin, but a good place to stage a visit to the Little Big Horn Battlefield. Plan on cooking at home, the Hardin dining possibilities are few and unsavory. The nightly campground ice cream social to raise money for charity is a nice touch. Priced at $35/night. Hardin KOA

State Date: August 2009
Our Rating: BAD – 6
It's hard to criticize a park that only charges $16.50 a night, and aside from the train noise, this is a good overnight stop. Level sites, trees, (some will block satellite reception), good hookups & excellent soft water were all a plus. On check-in, after driving over the railroad tracks right outside the park entrance, my wife asked about train noise and was told "we're on a siding, so it's not a problem at night". Well, the siding sounded like it ran through the site next to ours, and the train's horn was enough to rattle the windows. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well, nice since the park has no wireless. No cable TV, but clear shot at the satellite. Road noise from the interstate was negligible. An OK park in an area without many options, but bring your earplugs. Green Valley Campground

Roughrider Campground, Minot ND
Stay Date: August 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
This is a nice campground with enormous potential. The new owners are working to improve the infrastructure, but some areas, such as the dirt roads that turn to ruts and mud when it rains, need immediate improvement. Pull through sites are long, but with side-by-side hookups you're touching awnings with your neighbor. The water pressure is also sporadic depending on the number of people in the park. On the plus side, the park has many large trees (no cable - we had to use a portable dish to find a hole), is fairly quiet, and is convenient to town. The free WiFi was very strong and the Verizon cell and Aircard service also worked well. The owners and staff are friendly and eager to please, and the $25/night rate is very reasonable. A very good value park: quiet, dark, and reasonably priced. Gravel interior roads and sites. Self check-in although there are friendly hosts on-site. Sites a little close but long enough to stagger each rig for a bit more room. No cable TV, Free WiFi, and clear shot to satellite. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. A nice place to spend a day or two while exploring Bismarck for around $25/night. A Prairie Breeze RV Park

Our Rating: GOOD – 8
This park represents why Passport America membership is a good deal. We had a level, all concrete site with 50amp hookups, grass, shade, and plenty of room for $18.50/night. Although near the interstate, it was quiet and dark at night. Lots of pipeline workers and their children, but the pool kept them busy and they weren't a problem. Good free WiFi and cable TV, some trees so clear shot at satellite may be a problem. R & R Campground

Stay Date: July 2009
Our Rating: BAD – 5
This is a family-themed park best suited for campers with children. For those without, it is overpriced. Playgrounds, a pool, and activities abound, but roads are dusty, sites are highly sloped making leveling difficult, picnic tables are old and warped, and the "free" WiFi doesn't work. Freeway noise is noticeable but not a distraction. The staff runs around on golf carts at high speed creating dust everywhere - we arrived with a clean coach and two days later left with a dirty one. Verizon cell phone and air card worked well. Upon arrival, we were issued wrist bands because "security is a big problem here". Yikes.

Stay Date: July 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
This is a nice park with friendly owners. During the week, it's quiet; however, when the weekend comes, it's a noisy, bustling place with kids riding the rent-a-trikes everywhere. Heavily treed, there is no satellite use although the owner has installed dishes throughout the park that you can hook up to. Sites are good sized, but with all of the parked cars it seems crowded. It rained while we were here, and the roads quickly became muddy and we ended up with a lot of dirt spray on our coach. No WiFi, but Verizon and Aircard worked well. Our stay was impacted by one of the workampers having four dogs that barked every time someone walked by. The town of Faribault doesn't have much to offer except a Super Wal-Mart just up the road, and there is road construction everywhere. Check with the park before visiting; during our stay the main exit to town was closed. Overall, an OK place, but a bit overpriced at $31/night. Camp Faribo

Amana Colonies RV Park, Amana IA
Stay Date: July 2009
Our Rating: BAD – 6
A large expanse of grass without tree or bush, this campground fills the basic requirement of a place to park but not much else. Dirt roads and big, long dirt sites, but it didn't matter much over the 4th of July as the place was almost empty. Long walk to office or restrooms, although the dumpsters were convenient. Free WiFi was spotty and Verizon Aircard just barely worked. No cable, no broadcast TV, no pool, no playgrounds, just lots of grass and a place to park. No trees, so easy shot to satellite. Close to the Amana Colonies, interesting but expensive if you decide to shop. We were interested in seeing the area, but there isn't enough to lure us back to this bare-bones park. Overpriced at $32/night. Amana Colonies RV Park

Hickory Hollow Campground, Utica IL
Stay Date: July 2010
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
This is a great Passport America park for an overnight or longer stay. The park is convenient to the Interstate yet far enough to be fairly quiet at night. The level, gravel pull-thru sites are long and wide enough for slides and awning and hookups are convenient. The park has a nice pool, small store, and walking trails through the woods. Verizon Aircard worked well and the park's free WiFi worked well depending on the amount of users. No cable TV and lots of trees, so ask for a satellite-friendly site. A Flying J is 10 miles west, and the town of Utica is nearby. A bargain at $17/night. Hickory Hollow Campground

Spaulding Lake Campground, Niles MI
Stay Date: June 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
We enjoyed our stay here; quiet, well landscaped, and very friendly owners/managers. There are a variety of sites, from tree shaded to open, all level grass/dirt with solid hookups and a picnic table. The lakes are full of small bluegill and provide a fishing experience for the kids. There's a playground, basketball court, hiking trails through the woods and rec room, along with a small laundry. Verizon Aircard worked well, but the free park WiFi was exceptionally fast and secure. No cable TV, but plenty of open sites to see the satellite. The location was perfect for exploring the Amish communities, South Bend, and the lakefront communities. A very good value in this area at $28/night. Spaulding Lake Campground

Streetsboro/Cleveland SE KOA, Streetsboro OH
Stay Date: June 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
While the price was a bit high, this KOA is the only quality RV park in an area with few options. Most parks in this part of the country are 30 amp, no sewer, and crowded with seasonal campers. Interior roads and sites are gravel. We opted for a back-in site for our 10 day stay, and it was fairly level, grass covered, and tree shaded (we had to use a portable satellite dish). The free WiFi was generally not usable, even though an antenna was close by. TV broadcast reception was spotty, and there is no cable TV. The Verizon cell and Aircard reception was excellent. There are many activities for families on the weekend, and plenty of areas for children, including a swimming "pond". The area has many restaurants and adequate shopping, and access to I-480 and Cleveland attractions is very good but at $37/night it’s overpriced. Streetsboro KOA

Renfro Valley KOA, Renfro Valley KY
Stay Date: June 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
This is a park that works best for those with a medium or smaller RV, children, and who use the restrooms. For those of us with large motorhomes and who are only passing through, it is at best an average park. A narrow, climbing road leads to a cramped registration area, and we were led to a level gravel site that was steeply terraced and nearly precluded the use of passenger side slides. The free cable TV and WiFi worked well, and Verizon cell and Aircard also were strong. Lots of trees so find a hole for the satellite may be difficult. For an overnight stay, there are less expensive and easier to access parks in the area, especially with the KOA price of $47/night. Renfro Valley KOA

Wow - what a beautifully maintained park and at a Passport America rate! At arrival we were checked in by very professional staff and led to our site. The level, gravel sites have a patio area, table, and manicured grass with some shade. Sites are not huge but are large enough to extend slides and awning without feeling cramped. The free cable TV was excellent, and although the park has no WiFi, Verizon cell and Aircard service was very good. Lots of trees, but still had a clear shot at the satellite. The park is surrounded by hills and forest and is quiet and dark at night. Disneyland could take landscaping lessons from these people, and the Passport America rate of $17.50 was outstanding. Stay Date: June 2009
Our Rating: GOOD - 7
This is a quality park with a reasonable cost considering facilities. The free WiFi actually worked very well, an unusual event since most parks advertise WiFi but seldom deliver. Although a great park, we were in site 8, which is next to a large security light. Along with the bright light, it buzzed loudly all night long, and was a significant irritant. Ask to stay in a site other than 7 or 8. The cable TV worked well, and most sites had a clear shot at the satellite. The convenient location of this park (right off the interstate but quiet, with a Flying J next door makes it a location that we'll stay in again, the nightly fee was $30. Fort Chiswell RV Park

Stay Date: May 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
We enjoyed visiting this park; it's a reminder of what all of the KOA's used to be - clean, neatly manicured, nice facilities, and family oriented activities. On the other hand, the sites are small, the trees prevent use of a satellite (and there's no cable), most of the sites are 30A only, the roads are gravel and potholed, and the price is exorbitant for an overnight stay. It's a great weekend destination park for families, but at this time of year, the facilities aren't usable and there aren't any activities during the week, so a weekday overnight is overly priced. Casey is a small town with not much to offer and there's not much in the area, but the park is a nice place to just relax and enjoy the birds. This is a nice park, but due to the price ($38/night) we won't stay here again. Casey KOA

Red Barn Rendezvous RV Park, Edwardsville IL
Stay Date: May 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
We were pleasantly surprised with this immaculate little park during our week-long stay. Level, gravel pull through sites and convenient hookups were separated by a small grass strip. Although our site in the rear of the park was not overly large, we had an end site which gave us plenty of room. The park is nicely landscaped with flowers and small trees, and although it has a number of what appear to be long-term residents, their sites are well maintained. The owners were friendly and were quick to ask how our stay was going. No cable TV and spotty WiFi, but clear view of satellite. Located near an exit on I-55, it was very convenient to St. Louis attractions and shopping in Edwardsville. The only drawback is the drone of the interstate traffic, but it wasn't enough to keep us awake. The owners do not accept credit cards, requiring check or cash only. There aren't many parks in the area, but even if there was, this park would be worth staying at for the $30/night fee.Red Barn Rendezvous RV Park

Majestic Oaks Family RV Park, Lake Ozark MO
Stay Date: April 2009
Our Rating: GOOD –9
We thoroughly enjoyed our three-day stay in this meticulously maintained park in the oak forest above Lake of the Ozark. The owners have completed significant work in improving the facility; 50amp sites are huge gravel pull-thrus with a picnic table. Although the WiFi reception was spotty from our location, the Cable TV was exceptionally clear, important since the heavy tree cover prevents satellite reception. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. The park has nature trails through the woods, a pool, game lounge, and outdoor playground. Throughout the park seasonal campers have placed bird feeders and we watched hummingbirds and bluebirds from our site. Although there are some seasonal campers, their sites were very well maintained. All in all, this is a perfect destination for the area; quiet, peaceful, and extremely well maintained. Very reasonable at $26/night. Majestic Oaks Family RV Park

Stay Date: April 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
This is a pretty basic overnight spot with good potential. We were met by the friendly and helpful owner who escorted us to our site and explained the hookups. The sites are back-to-back, but with few sites occupied we were able to use the entire length which gave us an 80' plus pull-through. The sites are dirt with grass islands, and fairly level. There is no cable and there are trees so ask for a clear site if you intend to use your satellite dish. Free WiFi was adequate, and Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. There is some road and train noise, but not enough to be a distraction. The park is convenient to town and is fairly easy to access with a big rig. Nice folks and reasonably priced; we'd stay here again with the FMCA discount bringing the price to #20/night. Osage Prairie RV Park

No grass, shade, or tables, but your $25 gets you a friendly greeting, good power and water, and a safe place to spend the night. Yes, the trains are noisy, but this is a park that doesn't claim to be a resort. Basically a gravel parking lot with hookups. Good Verizon Aircard and cell service. Easy in/out on a short gravel road. We'd stay here again if necessary. No cable TV, but no trees, either. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Not many places out here, this is probably as good as it gets. Western Star RV Ranch

This is an old KOA, most of which appears to be used by permanent residents. Sites for transients are just long enough for a 40' MH and tow, and are close together and facing in alternate directions. Dirt roads are tree lined, and some sites have trees that will impact slide-outs. When I mentioned to the owner/manager that a tree was very close to one of my slides, he was quick to visit the site and offered to cut the branch. No cable TV or WiFi, and getting a clear shot at the satellite may be difficult. The park is located in a residential area but is easy to access. The location is quiet and provides easy access to shopping and sightseeing around Wichita. $26/night with Good Sam discount. All Seasons RV Park

American RV Park, Albuquerque NM
Stay Date: Multiple, last stay April 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 10
This is our favorite park when visiting the Albuquerque area; professionally run, nicely l andscaped, and fairly priced. We took advantage of the stay four nights/get one free which makes the stay very reasonable. Free WiFi worked well, good cable, and the free "continental" breakfast are great touches. Trees may hamper use of a satellite dish. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Paved interior roads and fair sized level sites. Road noise is noticeable at night but not too bad if running the air or fan and being close to I-40 allows easy access to town. A great park, we'll stay here again, although the rate keeps rising, currently $38/night. American RV Park

Road noise is noticeable at night but not too bad if running the air or fan and being close to I-40 allows easy access to town. A great park, we'll stay here again, although the rate keeps rising, currently $38/night. American RV Park

Isleta Lakes RV Park, Isleta Pueblo NM
Stay Date: April 2009
Our Rating: BAD - 6
This park has many attributes; good location, large, level sites with shelter and table, and access to a large casino and several fishing lakes. The free WiFi did not work well; however, Verizon service and Aircard were strong. The office staff was friendly and we appreciated the helpful security staff and the 24-hour gate at the entry. The drawback is the noise from trains. The park is adjacent to the stop for the Rail Runner express, which starts at 5:03 AM and runs every hour until after 8:00 PM. During the night, freight and Amtrak trains are frequent. All use their horns continually, and the noise is loud and obtrusive. Earplugs are mandatory for this to be a quality stay.

Birdwatcher’s RV Park, San Antonio NM
Stay Date: April 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
Not many frills, but it is a decent value for the price. Sites were well spaced and level in the large gravel parking lot. Hookups were OK, there’s no cable but a clear shot at the satellite. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. Convenient to Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge. There are lots of quail and singing Red-winged blackbirds in the evening. Besides Bosque Del Apache, it's a nice trip (50 Miles) to the Very Large Array, which is worth the trip. Socorro, 10 miles away, has a small Super Wal-Mart and a very good brewery restaurant (Socorro Springs). The owner is friendly and aside from the occasional train, it's a quiet stay. We'd stay here again, a truly reasonable price of $23/night. Birdwatcher’s RV Park

Boot Hill RV Park, Alamogordo NM
Stay Date: March 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
This park has quickly become the class park of Alamogordo; spacious, well-laid out sites are separated by a rail fence, the facilities are immaculate, and the owners go out of their way to ensure a great stay. All gravel, no trees or tables yet, and the water is really hard; but these are offset by the easy access to local attractions and the family atmosphere. No cable TV but unobstructed view of the satellite. Free WiFi worked well and Verizon cell and Aircard worked well also. Besides White Sands NM, the Sacramento Mountains offer an observatory tour, large Indian Casino, shopping, and wildlife viewing. Three Rivers Petroglyph site, Valley of the Fires, and Lincoln Historic Site are all great spots to visit from the park. Free admission to musical events and the pot luck dinners where we made new friends were highlights of our visit. This is a nice park with likewise exceptional owners and a reasonable price of $28/night. Boot Hill RV Resort

Marathon Motel & RV Park, Marathon TX
Stay Date: February 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
Let's face it - if you want to visit Big Bend with a full hookup site and services Marathon is the only choice; so it's a good thing this park is very nice. We were given the last space available, which was apparently a former workamper site - no pad, picnic table, and only gravel/dirt which was not very level. The standard 50A sites were pull-thru, also dirt/gravel without pads. The free cable TV and WiFi worked well, and Verizon service was good for the cell and Aircard. There is a beautifully landscaped courtyard and fireplace and the owners are exceptionally friendly. Marathon is an interesting little town; a couple of good restaurants, and the Gage Hotel is worth a visit. We'd stay here again. Marathon Motel & RV Park

Bayside RV Park, Palacios TX
Stay Date: February 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
We enjoyed our stay at this pleasant waterfront park. The park has reopened after a lengthy closing and the owners and staff are going out of their way to make visitors comfortable. They hosted a free fish fry on Friday which was very enjoyable, and always checked to see that we were enjoying our stay. Sites are large and have a view of the bay with the harbor behind. Many sites allow motorhomes to pull in nose-first for an unobstructed view of the water. Some noise is generated by the shrimp fleet (Texas' largest), but it was quiet at night. They owners are still working to improve the park, and picnic tables and pads are future items. The free cable TV and WiFi both worked very well. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well also. Palacios is a small town with a few restaurants, but Bay City and Port Lavaca are each 30 miles away and have Wal-Mart Supercenters and other amenities. This is a good park to stage from for visits to Brazoria, San Bernard, and Aransas National Wildlife Refuges, and overall, the area is a great birding mecca. Although this park still needs some work, the owners and staff make the stay worthwhile, with a great pull-thru price of $25. Bayside RV Park

Fort Clark Springs RV Park, Brackettville TX
Stay Date: February 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 7
Right off the highway, but you have to weave through the complex to get to the park. A curiously different experience. A WWII Army post that was bought by a company and turned into a resort area, but it doesn’t quite work. There’s a golf course, huge pool, old barracks that have been converted to motel rooms, and a nice museum. Our site was a level, long and wide back-in. Check in was easy and manager is friendly and helpful. Has cable TV, WiFi (we couldn't log in), Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. We were in one of the few areas that the satellite was blocked by trees. We had deer walking through in the evening. Nice quiet park off the beaten path. Very interesting Fort but not too scenic and in the middle of nowhere, inexpensive at $23.50/night. Fort Clark Springs RV Park

Goose Island State Park, Rockport TX
Stay Date: Feb 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
This in another quality Texas State Park with a lot to offer. Two areas comprise the park; the water sites, located on the bay, and wooded, which are carved out of the heavy woods. We passed on the water sites; a bit cramped, not very level, smelled bad (they're right next to "stinky beach") but have nice views of the bay. The wooded sites were very private, with a small entrance that was a challenge getting a 40' MH into, but opened inside into a large area with fire pit, BBQ, and pad with picnic table. No cable TV, but most sites have a clear shot at the satellite. Verizon cell and Aircard did not have service here. The facilities are extensive, with hiking and nature trails, boat launch and fish cleaning stations, and a large fishing pier. Guided bird tours and photo classes are offered, and the staff is very friendly. This is an excellent park for both the retired community and families. The only improvement would be addition of sewer hookups. Goose Island State Park

Blanco State Park, Blanco TX
Stay Date: Jan 2009
Our Rating: GOOD – 9
A nice park, with large live oak and spacious sites, fairly quiet, and friendly park hosts. Each site has a concrete pad and picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. The river is stocked with 6" trout and fishing in the park is free, with loaner rods and reels at the office. The free WiFi was not usable, but Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. No cable TV, and no clear view of the satellite without using a portable dish. Water pressure is very high, and the water is very hard. The town of Blanco has a few restaurants (try the bowling alley pie), and a supermarket is located a mile south of town. The full hookup “premium” sites are segregated from the rest of the sites and are quiet and spacious. Another good value at $23/night for full hookups. Blanco State Park

Palmetto State Park, Gonzales TX
Stay Date: December 2008
Our Rating: GOOD – 8
This is what a state park should be; tree covered, quiet, nice pads, and plenty of hiking trails. Sites are large and have a pad with picnic table, a fire pit, and separate barbecue. Electric and water only at the sites with a dump station, no cable or WiFi; just the noise from crows and other birds. You'll need a portable dish for satellite TV and 50' of coax to find a hole in the trees. Verizon cell and Aircard worked well. About six miles off I-10 and 12 miles from the nearest town (Gonzales) with a small Wal-Mart and a few restaurants. Beware of trees on the narrow access roads. There is fishing in a small lake and the San Marcos river. Site with water/electric are $16/night. Palmetto State Park
